New York State
New York State, as it’s often called, is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Best known for the bustling city that never sleeps, New York, there is in fact a lot more to discover in New York State than just this metropolis, including plenty of scenery, many more cities, and Niagara Falls.
Flights to New York
New York state has many international airports, and the three main ones are: John F. Kennedy (airport code: JFK), Newark Liberty (airport code: EWR) and LaGuardia (airport code: LGA). There are many airlines offering direct flights to New York from the UK and these vary depending on which of the airports you’re flying to. Flights to New York arriving at the John F. Kennedy airport include American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Kuwait Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. British Airways, Continental Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic offer flights to Newark Liberty Airport, however if you want to catch a flight to New York’s La Guardia airport there are no airlines flying direct from the UK.
New York Tourist Attractions
It’s easy to think of the state of New York as just being New York City and nothing else. True enough, this is the state’s most popular tourist destination with so much to see and do; but huge cities are not for everyone and if you prefer to get out and see the countryside, New York State has lots to offer you too.
New York City
Most visitors coming to New York City will spend their time on Manhattan. It’s a popular place for short breaks but you could spend weeks here and never get to see and do everything so a trip to New York City really needs to be planned ahead of getting here. Aside from all the obvious landmarks like the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty, New York City has great shopping too, open spaces including the huge Central Park, and multiple excellent museums.
Albany
If you like cities but want a change from the bustling streets of New York City then Albany is a world away! Albany is actually the capital city of New York State and it’s quite small in comparison to NYC. Even so it’s a vibrant city with a selection of attractions including the New York State Capitol Building.
Buffalo
Back to a bigger city now; Buffalo is New York State’s second largest city and has countless attractions itself as well as being the location for the American side of Niagara Falls.
The Adirondacks
As already mentioned, New York State is not all about the cities and though there are some very large cities here there are also areas of wilderness within easy reach. The Adirondack Mountains is a very popular region where you can enjoy hiking, camping and many other outdoor activities. This is home to the famous Lake Placid and Lake Champlain.
When Should You Visit New York State?
What time of year you visit New York State really depends on what you wish to do here. The cities can be great at any time of the year - New York City for example is very popular coming up to Christmas, or visit during the summer when temperatures are hot and humid. For the great outdoors, summer is best for hiking, but there are also some excellent ski resorts here. For somewhere in between, Spring and Autumn can be a good time as temperatures are mild.
