New York City Tourist Attractions

New York City isn’t just Manhattan though admittedly this is where many visitors to New York will spend their time as Manhattan is home to most of the city’s best and most famous attractions. With so much to see and do you could spend weeks here, but New York City is particularly popular as a short break destination and with affordable flights to New York many tourists visit from the UK for a long weekend.

If you’re only coming for a short time the best advice is to plan ahead of arriving exactly what you want to do, this way you can figure out a plan of action and see everything in each neighbourhood before moving on to the next.

In Lower Manhattan you’ve got loads to see. This is where many of New York City’s ferries depart from, and where you’ll head if you want to visit the Statue of Liberty and/or Ellis Island. Whether you’re heading there or not, you could always take a boat trip to see many of the sights from the water.

Wall Street and the financial district is at the lower end of Manhattan too. It’s home to the New York Stock Exchange and impressive historic buildings while nearby is the former site of the World Trade Center.

Heading up Manhattan you come to some of the iconic landmarks in the world. There’s the Empire State Building which is the tallest building in New York and offers some great views from the observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors. You can visit during the day or some back after dark to see Manhattan all lit up below you. The Rockefeller Center also has an observation deck, called Top of the Rock, and it too offers great views. Talking of the Rockefeller Center, if you’re visiting around Christmas you can come here and enjoy ice skating and see the famous and huge Christmas tree.

Central Park is another attraction, offering a more peaceful oasis away from the busy city streets of New York. There’s lots to see and do inside the park and in this part of New York you’ll also find many of the city’s excellent museums.

When Should You Visit New York City?

New York City is certainly popular at any time of the year and is a great place to come in the lead up to Christmas when the weather is usually crisp and sometimes snowy. Spring and autumn are good times as humidity is lower and temperatures are mild to warm while summers can be hot and humid.
