As a gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina is a beautiful state, located in the south east of the USA. Scenery and historical attractions, as well as a great coast, make North Carolina a popular tourist destination.

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport (airport code: CLT) is in the largest city of Charlotte. For flights to North Carolina and arriving in Charlotte, many airlines have 1-stop routes. British Airways stops in Boston, Virgin stops in New York and a flight to North Carolina with United travels through Washington.

Blue Ridge Parkway

If you’re after some of the scenery that North Carolina is famous for, then a great place to start is the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a scenic road that travels between the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park here in North Carolina. Not only does it offer great scenery but there’s also history and multiple places that you can stop along the way.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Once you’ve driven along the Blue Ridge Parkway make sure you stop and spend some time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is actually frequently recorded as the most visited national park in the United States and with its combination of beautiful scenery it’s not hard to see why. Nearly 95% of the park is forest and you can tour parts of the park by vehicle, or make the most of the many hiking trails.

Crystal Coast

Along with the forests North Carolina has a great coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. One of the most popular stretches is the Crystal Coast, known for both its scenery and its cities. The Crystal Coast also includes the Croatan National Forest and Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Raleigh

Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital city and it has some great features too. There are museums like the NC Museum of History, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. The North Carolina State Capitol Building is a major landmark and there are also parks and open spaces such as the William B. Umstead State Park to enjoy.

Charlotte

While Raleigh is the capital city Charlotte is the largest city of North Carolina. It too has museums, including the Mint Museum of Art, the Carolinas Aviation Museum, and the Levine Museum of the New South. The latter gives visitors insight into the history of the American South.

Charlotte also has plenty of shops and entertainment and is a great city to visit if you enjoy watching professional sports teams. The Carolina Panthers play American Football here, plus there’s the Carolina Bobcats, the Knights, and the Checkers.

When Should You Visit North Carolina?

The weather in North Carolina is going to depend on where you are in the state as the coast has a subtropical climate while the mountains are cooler. Generally you’ll enjoy warm to hot summers, always with high humidity, while spring and autumn are warm too. Winters are mild on the coast but can be cold and snowy in the mountains, great for enjoying some of North Carolina’s ski resorts.
