Air Canada and Lufthansa both travel through Toronto and Denver. Most flights to Bismarck take between 13 and 16 hours.

Bismarck Tourist Attractions

One thing Bismarck is not short of is history so if you’re interested in exploring some of the USA’s historical sites this is a good place to do so. There are sites like Camp Hancock, plus historical buildings like the Old Governor’s Mansion, and if you’re visiting with family you can also enjoy attractions that include the Dakota Zoo.

Camp Hancock

Camp Hancock is one of Bismarck’s more famous attractions. It was established as a military outpost in 1872 under the name of Camp Creeley with the purpose of providing protection to workers who were constructing the Northern Pacific Railroad. The main building of the camp, the camp headquarters, still stands here today.

Chief Looking’s Village

History from a native American’s point of view can be explored at Chief Looking’s Village where there’s a self guided tour that tells you more. There’s not too much left of the village to see except for a fortification ditch and depressions where their earthlodges used to sit. Just to the north of Bismarck is another village that was once home to the Mandan Indians and they lived here for nearly 300 years. This is the Double Ditch Indian Village.

North Dakota Heritage Center

You’ll find out more about the Native Americans of the Bismarck region at the North Dakota Heritage Center. This is actually the largest museum in the state and offers many excellent exhibits and displays covering the Plains Indians, as well as historical artefacts from the early days of farming and the military. There’s a statue of the native guide from the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sakakawea, at the entrance to this Bismarck museum.

Old Governor’s Mansion

The restored Victorian era mansion that once was the home of the Governor is another of Bismarck’s popular attractions. It was built in 1884 and each state governor between the years of 1893 and 1960 lived here. You can tour the home and see a number of exhibits that include information on the history of the house.

Dakota Zoo

For families the Dakota Zoo is a must see attraction in Bismarck. Open between late April and the end of September the Dakota Zoo has native species like the brown bear and the moose as well as some endangered species from around the world.

When Should You Visit Bismarck?

Winter isn’t a good time to visit Bismarck as the weather is cold and many of the attractions in the city are only open during the summer months. Temperatures are cold, proved by the fact that the average high in January does not reach above freezing. Summers are very warm in comparison and humid. June is the wettest month while July is the warmest, with an average high of 29C.
