North Dakota
North Dakota is the United States’ 19th largest state though one of the least populated. It’s a state in the Midwest Great Plains region of the USA, and North Dakota and features plenty of natural beauty along with bustling towns and cities.
Flights to North Dakota
The main airport for flights to North Dakota is in Fargo, at the Hector International Airport (airport code: FAR). Other airports include the Grand Forks International Airport (code: GFK) and the Minot International Airport (code: MOT). The Hector Airport is about 3 miles (5km) outside of Fargo and there is a good taxi service between the airport and the city. You can get a flight to North Dakota from the UK with nearly a dozen major airlines, including British Midland or British Airways. They transfer in Chicago or Denver, respectively. US Airways has a flight to North Dakota that connects in Philadelphia and Minneapolis for a longer trip.
North Dakota Tourist Attractions
Bismarck
The main two cities in North Dakota are Fargo and Bismarck, plus Grand Forks is fairly major as well. Bismarck is actually the capital North Dakota and one of its main attractions and landmarks is the North Dakota State Capitol Building. Unique among US capitol buildings, North Dakota’s is a skyscraper built in the art deco style in 1933 and if you go on a tour of the building you can enjoy the fabulous views from the top!
Bismarck has other historical attractions too including Camp Hancock and the Old Governor’s Mansion. For something different you can visit the largest museum in North Dakota, the North Dakota Heritage Center, or have a family fun day out at the Dakota Zoo.
Fargo
North Dakota’s largest city is Fargo and it’s a great destination if you enjoy visiting museums. The Plains Art Museum is the perfect stop for art lovers, while Bonanzaville USA is a great introduction to the history of North Dakota with its village set up of historical buildings from the region.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Located in the badlands area of North Dakota is the state’s only national park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Named after this former US president who owned and worked on a ranch here, the park features three areas of badlands with their unique rock formations, and the remains of the ranch itself, Elkhorn Ranch. You can get around the park on the various scenic drives available in your car, or get out of the car and enjoy a hike or horseback riding.
Devils Lake
More of the scenery of North Dakota can be enjoyed at Devils Lake. This is the largest lake in the state and it too features plenty of scenic drives, along with trails for hiking, places to camp, fish and go boating too.
On the Border
North Dakota borders with the province of Manitoba, Canada in the north and there are several attractions here to visit alongside the border. The Turtle Mountains is yet another scenic region of North Dakota, running right along the border with Manitoba, and there’s the International Peace Garden on the border too. Great during the summer.
When Should You Visit North Dakota?
The continental climate of North Dakota means you’ll get a great variety in temperature between summer and winter. Summers are warm to hot with average highs usually in the high 20’s C, while winters are cold – the average high in January is just -9C. This means for sightseeing you should definitely avoid the winter!
