Situated in south central United States, Oklahoma is a Great Plains state. Oklahoma isn’t the best known when it comes to attractions, but the state actually has quite a lot to offer including vibrant cities, parkland and culture.

Flights to Oklahoma

There are two main airports for flights into Oklahoma. The Will Rogers World Airport (airport code: OKC) is in Oklahoma City, and the Tulsa International Airport (code: TUL) is just outside of Tulsa. Many airlines have regular flights to Oklahoma from the UK, arriving at the Will Rogers Airport. Delta Airlines connects once in Atlanta, and British Airways makes its stop in Chicago. Virgin Atlantic takes a longer route, and travels through New York and then Chicago for a 2-stop flight to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Tourist Attractions

Oklahoma City

If you enjoy visiting cities then you’ll like a visit to Oklahoma City. This is the state’s capital and largest city and it includes numerous museums and cultural attractions. There’s the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Oklahoma City Zoological Park, and the Myriad Botanical Gardens among the city’s more popular attractions.

Oklahoma City is also well known for the terrible event that took place here in 1995. A federal building was blown up by a US Army veteran resulting in the deaths of 168 people. There is the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum to visit, which marks this tragedy, and it’s in fact one of the most visited attractions in the state. There’s a moving memorial with a Survivor’s Wall where the 800 survivors are named. Those who died have been memorialised in the Field of Empty Chairs where each chair represents a victim. The Survivor Tree is popular too – it’s an American elm tree that survived the bombing while everything around it was destroyed.

National Areas in Oklahoma

Oklahoma doesn’t have any National Parks but the National Parks Service does administer a number of destinations within the state.

The Ouachita area includes the Ouachita National Forest, and the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. This is a great place to come if you love the outdoors as there are many outdoor pursuits possible here. The areas include a great deal of the Oucahita Mountains, and you can go mountain biking, horse back riding, hiking, and more.

There’s also the Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area where you can enjoy similar outdoor pursuits too, plus the Chicksaw National Recreation Area were you can add boating and camping to the list.

State Parks in Oklahoma

As if that wasn’t enough you can also try the 50 state parks within the state of Oklahoma. There are many different kinds of landscapes represented including Quartz Mountain State Park, and Natural Falls State Park.

Route 66

While in Oklahoma you can also gets your kicks on Route 66! Sections of this very famous highway run through Oklahoma on its way from Chicago to Los Angeles. The highway isn’t actually registered anymore though some sections do still exist and it’s a popular driving route.

When Should You Visit Oklahoma?

Oklahoma is within Tornado Alley so this should be a consideration when deciding when to come here. Tornadoes can occur any time of the year though are most common in the spring. Generally Oklahoma has hot summers and winters can be quite cold in comparison.
