Oklahoma City Tourist Attractions

Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum

Oklahoma City made the news around the world in 1995 when a federal building was bombed by a disgruntled US Army veteran. The bombing killed 168 people and injured many more, and the building was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished. Today the area where the building once stood is a national memorial and is one of the city’s most visited attractions.

There’s a small museum where you can find out more about this tragic event, plus several monuments that mention both the dead and those who survived. The Survivor Tree is also popular. This tree was the only thing that survived when everything around it became rubble.

Myriad Botanical Gardens

If you enjoy trees and plants then you can visit Oklahoma City’s Myriad Botanical Gardens. The gardens are right in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City and include a large park, a tropical conservatory, and pretty landscaping with a lake, fountains and waterfalls.

Bricktown

Also in downtown Oklahoma City is a neighbourhood called Bricktown. This was an old warehouse district and is now redeveloped as a centre for entertainment and nightlife. You’ll find numerous restaurants, nightclubs, bars and shops here.

Adventure District

The Adventure District is just as popular and as the name suggests there are several attractions here that are linked to adventure! The Oklahoma City Zoo is one of them, along with the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. At the Kirkpatrick Center you’ll find a variety of attractions too, including an air and space museum.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art

If culture is more your thing then the Museum of Art in Oklahoma City is a good place to visit. This is one of the top museums in Oklahoma City and features a beautiful collection of Chihuly Glass; actually the largest collection of such in the world. There are other permanent exhibitions too, as well temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year.

When Should You Visit Oklahoma City?

Summers are popular in Oklahoma City but can get pretty hot. The average high for July is 34C but the air is very humid so it often feels warmer and sticky. There are also often extremes, so it can get even hotter than this. To avoid these extremes you could visit in the spring or autumn when temperatures are milder, though it is a little wetter at this time of year.
