Philadelphia Tourist Attractions
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell
One of the most famous attractions in Philadelphia is Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Both are part of the greater Independence National Historic Park, and allow visitors to see where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Liberty Bell, which once sat in the bell tower, is on display just across the street at the Liberty Center.
Philadelphia Old City
The National Historic Park is within the old city of Philadelphia, and it’s just one of a number of historical attractions here. The Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site is one and it preserves the home of author Edgar Allen Poe, with pieces from the period. Elfreth’s Alley is another interesting attraction as this is the oldest continually inhabited street in the USA. You can do a guided tour of the street and get to see the oldest house which was built in 1702.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
Another famous Philadelphia attraction is the Museum of Art. This museum was seen a number of times in the ‘Rocky’ movies, and in recognition of this there’s actually a statue of Rocky right outside. The museum itself has one of the largest art collections in the world with works from many well known artists such as Dali and Van Gogh.
Philadelphia Zoo
The Philadelphia Zoo is also a historic attraction as this is the oldest zoo in the United States. History aside, the zoo is home to over 1,300 animals from regions all over the world. The children’s petting zoo is popular with younger kids.
Academy of Natural Sciences
If you’re interested in the natural world then Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences may also be a worthwhile visit. There are over 17 million species represented at the academy including dinosaur bones. Most days they have live animals demonstrations where you can get to find out more about a species.
When Should You Visit Philadelphia?
Summers are hot and humid in Philadelphia so this isn’t always the best time to visit. Temperatures in July and August reach an average daily high of around 31C, but humidity makes it feel hotter and hence uncomfortable. Spring and autumn may be better times as temperatures are mild to warm, while winters are on the cold side, reaching an average high of 4C in January.
