Portland Rose Festival

Something that Portland is well known for is roses. It’s actually nicknamed Rose City because of its long association with growing these beautiful plants and flowers and the best time to see them is at the Portland Rose Festival. This takes place in June every year and attracts around half a million spectators to the Grand Floral Parade, and the fairground and other attractions.

No matter what time of year you’re visiting Portland you can still go and see the Portland International Rose Test Gardens.

Other Parks and Gardens in Portland

If you enjoy parks and gardens then you can visit more than just the International Rose Test Gardens in Portland. This is quite a green city after all and as well as the numerous public parks you’ll find landscaped gardens such as the Portland Japanese Garden, and the Chinese Classical Garden. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is among the museums in Portland. One of the most popular exhibits is the submarine, USS Blueback, which was used in the filming of ‘The Hunt for Red October’.

The Portland Museum of Art is also a popular museum and it’s home to Portland’s largest collection of arts.

The Portlandia Sculpture

One of Portland’s interesting landmarks is the Portlandis Sculpture. This is the second largest hammered copper statue in the United States, and is second only to New York’s Statue of Liberty! The sculpture is based on the city’s official seal and can be seen outside the Public Services Building.

When Should You Visit Portland?

Though winters are mild in Portland this is when most of the city’s rain falls so it may not be so good for sightseeing. Summers are warm and fairly dry, while autumn and spring can be nice too.
