Considering that Rhode Island is the smallest state in the USA there are many interesting things to see and do here! Known officially as Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Rhode Island offers a great variety of attractions, from beautiful coastlines to lots of history.
Flights to Rhode Island
The main airport in this small state is the Theodore Francis Green State Airport (airport code: PVD), though it's more commonly known as the T.F Green Airport. It's located about 6 miles south of the largest city, Providence, in the city of Warwick. There are several 1-stop flights to Rhode Island to choose from, on many major airlines when coming from the UK. British Midland and United Airlines both connect in Washington, but Virgin Atlantic goes through New York City. Or for something different, Northwest Airlines has a flight to Rhode Island with a transfer in Detroit.
Rhode Island Tourist Attractions
Providence
Both the capital and the largest city of Rhode Island is Providence. This is a really attractive city that features many historical buildings, but attractive and impressive in architecture. The Rhode Island State House is just one of these. It was built in 1901 and has the fourth largest self-supporting marble dome in the world! City Hall is older, built in 1878, and a charming building, while the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the USA can be founding Providence too. It’s called The Arcade and was opened in 1828.
Other Towns and Cities in Rhode Island
If you enjoy historical towns and cities you’ll really love visiting Rhode Island! Providence is just one of the cities in this small state that’s packed with history. Newport has many attractions including some wonderful old mansions such as the Astor’s Beechwood Mansion, the Breakers, and Belcourt Castle. Newport was home to many of the USA’s elite and these mansions used to be their homes.
East Greenwich is one of the oldest cities in the United States as it was established in the 1600’s. It too has a wonderful mansion you can visit, called the James Mitchell Varnum Mansion, built in 1773while another highlight is one of the first post offices in the USA, as well as the Second Kent County Jail.
In the Pawtucket area of Rhode Island there are historical attractions too including the Slater Mill Historic Site, and the Slater Memorial Park.
The Coastline of Rhode Island
The state of Rhode Island has over 400 miles of coastline to explore so if you enjoy watching the waves crashing on the shore this is a great state to visit! Along the whole coastline you’ll find some fantastic scenery though there are a few places that stand out above the rest. Block Island is just one of many islands just off the coast of Rhode Island and it’s a popular one with some wonderful hiking opportunities and great beaches.
Elsewhere in the state is Narrangansett, a town that reputedly has the best beaches in the whole of the New England region. While visiting the beach here you can also stay and see the Indian Head, Point Judith Lighthouse, and Narrangansett Towers.
When Should You Visit Rhode Island?
Rhode Island has quite high humidity throughout the year which means summers can be hot and sticky while winters can be cool and damp. For this reason winters aren’t the best time to visit, though some would argue summers aren’t the best time either! The average high in July is 28C so you may like to plan your visit in the spring or autumn when it’s a little cooler.
