Columbia is the capital and largest city of the state of South Carolina and it’s located right in the heart of the state in the Southern USA. There are plenty of historical attractions to see and visit in Columbia, or make the most of the city’s modern museums and culture.

Flights to Columbia

The main airport for international flights to Columbia is the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (airport code: CAE), which is served by a number of major airlines. Flights that go through Washington are available with either Continental Airlines or United Airlines, but KLM and Delta both connect in Atlanta. There are 2-stop flights to Columbia as well from the UK. With Air Canada, you'll be travelling via Toronto and then Washington, and with Virgin Atlantic you can get a flight to Columbia through New York City and Charlotte.

Columbia Tourist Attractions

The city of Columbia was founded in 1786 and it was established specifically for the role of being the capital of South Carolina. As such it was one of the first ‘planned’ cities in the USA and was laid out on a specific street pattern, allowing for green open spaces, areas for industry, shops and more. In recent years the downtown core of Columbia has undergone revitalisation, making this an attractive and popular part of the city once more. It’s the downtown core, along with Columbia’s history and culture that make this a popular stop for tourists.

South Carolina State House

The South Carolina State House is the city’s most prominent and grand landmark. It’s a Greek-Revival style building that was started in 1855 but because of problems and the American Civil War it wasn’t completed until 1907. During the Civil War the building was targeted several times and the bronze stars you can see here today mark the spots where cannon balls hit. You can visit the State House and the grounds where there are a number of monuments to see and a nice rose garden.

Columbia’s Museums

If a visit to the historic State House has sparked your interest in local history you’ll also enjoy a visit to the South Carolina State Museum. This museum is located in Columbia and showcases the local and state history and culture. The Columbia Museum of Art is another of Columbia’s popular museums.

Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens

Because Columbia did sustain a lot of damage during the Civil War there aren’t as many historical buildings here as there are in some other US cities. One that does remain is the impressive Hampton-Preston Mansion and it’s one of the few remaining antebellum houses in Columbia. It was built in 1818 and visitors can tour the house and gardens, seeing period furniture and decorations.

Riverbanks Zoo

For a change of scenery the Riverbanks Zoo, just one mile outside of Columbia city centre, is definitely worth a visit. It’s considered by many to be among the top ten zoos in the United States and has been constantly growing and increasing the number of animals who live here, including species from around the world.

When Should You Visit Columbia?

Summer is a hot and humid time to visit Columbia so may not be to everyone’s taste. It’s the wettest time of year and temperatures peak in July when average highs are around 34C. Autumn are spring are still warm, and with the drier weather this is a good time to visit Columbia. Winters are also pleasant as the weather is mild.
