It’s best known for its historical heritage and attractive buildings, many of which survived unscathed through the American Civil War, unlike in many other cities in the south. Head to the Charleston Museum first to find out all about the history of the city, then take to the streets on a horse drawn carriage and admire the many beautiful buildings and mansions. The Battery is one of Charleston’s parks and it’s popular for its great views and the wonderful mansions, plus there’s also the Fort Sumter National Monument to see.
Columbia
The capital city and largest in South Carolina is Columbia. Columbia also has historic buildings such as the State House. They started building this in 1877 but construction was delayed due to the Civil War. You can still see where cannon balls hit the unfinished building as they’re marked by bronze stars. Columbia has many of South Carolina’s best museums too, including the South Carolina State Museum which focuses on all things South Carolina related. Other museums include the Columbia Museum of Art, and tours of the Hampton-Preston Mansion are popular.
Congaree National Park
The only national park in South Carolina is about 20 miles from Columbia and it’s called the Congaree National Park. You can enjoy hiking trails and basic camping facilities here but the main attraction is the wildlife and plant life which includes wild turkeys, bobcats, black bears, and the giant hardwood forests.
