The state of Tennessee is well known for its associations with the world of music in cities such as Nashville and Memphis, but there’s more to this state than just its cities. Beautiful scenery is just one of the other attractions in the Southern USA state of Tennessee.

Tennessee Tourist Attractions

Nashville

Nashville is one of the two most famous cities in Tennessee and it’s also the state capital. With its nickname of Music City, anyone with any knowledge of more modern music will know about Tennessee’s association with country and western music, and if you’re a fan then you’ll want to check out two of the city’s attractions: the Music Valley Wax Museum, and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This Tennessee city isn’t just about music though. Being the state capital it’s home to the Tennessee State Capitol building, and has a number of historic buildings that are quite impressive, including the Belmont Mansion, and Fort Negley. Another of Nashville’s museums is the Tennessee State Museum.

Memphis

The other most famous city in Tennessee is Memphis. This is larger than Nashville and is popular for the Graceland attraction – the former home of Elvis Presley. You don’t have to be a fan to visit this attraction as anyone can appreciate what an amazing property Graceland is. Unless you want to compete with even more visitors than usual, don’t visit in early January (when Elvis was born), or mid August (when he died)!

Su Studio is another famous and popular attraction of Memphis as this is where Elvis, and also Johnny Cash made their first recordings.

Away from the music, Memphis Botanic Garden is a nice place to visit, and there’s Memphis Zoo too. More outdoor activities include trips up the Mississippi River, and visits to Mud Island River Park.

Gatlinburg

As the gateway to the Great Smoke Mountains Gatlinburg is a popular Tennessee resort town. If you’re visiting the Great Smoky Mountains you can start your trip here, but also take time to see and do some of the things Gatlinburg itself has to offer. These include the observation deck of the Gatlinburg Space Needle from which you’ll get some amazing views. There’s also Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Haunted Adventure, as well as more great views from Crockett Mountain via the Gatlinburg Sky Lift.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Not only are the Great Smoky Mountains a US national park, but there are also listed as an International Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of the most visited national parks in the United States and has some spectacular scenery. Get out of the car and explore it on foot on the Appalachian Trail or one of the many other hiking trails that exist here.

When Should You Visit Tennessee?

It’s cooler up in the mountains but generally Tennessee has a humid and warm climate. The high humidity adds to the discomfort during the height of summer when average high temperatures in the cities get up to 30+C. Soring and autumn can be a better time to visit to beat the heat, while winters are cool.
