Houston Tourist Attractions
Space Center Houston
One of the top attractions in Houston is the Space Center and this is where the phrase ‘Houston, we have a problem’ comes from! You don’t necessarily have to be into the space missions to find a visit to this space museum interesting, though it does help! The museum itself features many different exhibits and artefacts that have been saved from many different space missions. Many visitors enjoy taking one of the guided tram tours though – there are two: one is the astronaut training facilities and is a must-do for any budding astronauts! The second includes seeing Mission Control and more.
Houston Downtown Aquarium
In the downtown area of Houston is the city’s aquarium, popular with locals and visitors alike. This is several attractions in one, because in addition to the aquarium itself there’s a ferris wheel and carnival type rides. The aquarium has features like the Shark Voyage, Louisiana Swamp exhibit, a shipwreck, and a rainforest.
Hermann Park
Hermann Park is also several attractions in one. It’s a huge park in Houston’s South of Downtown district, covering an area of 455 acres. You have park attractions here where you can sit and relax, or play a round of golf on the 18 hole course. There’s also a lake with pedal boats for rental. The park is home to the Houston Zoo where there are over 800 species of exotic animals, and you can find out more about the natural world at the park’s Museum of Natural Science.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
The archetypal image of Texas is the livestock and cowboys, so if this is what you’re looking for on a visit to Houston make sure you come in March when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is on! This is the world’s largest rodeo, so makes the perfect introduction to this hugely popular sport, plus you can enjoy all sorts of other fun activities including live music, a carnival and more.
When Should You Visit Houston?
Houston stays warm all year round though the downside is that it’s humid and quite wet here. Summers may be a little too warm and humid for some visitors, peaking in July and August when the average high is 34C. The months leading up to this are a few degrees cooler, although May and June are the wettest months. Even if you come in January you’ll have mild temperatures; the average high is a comfortable 17C in January, the coolest month.
