Salt Lake City is the capital and also the largest city in the state of Utah, in the western United States. Salt Lake City International Airport (airport code: SLC) is the only international airport in the state, and it handles nearly 500 flights to Salt Lake City per day. Getting a flight to Salt Lake City from London is easy with several options to choose from, and all choices have just one connection. BMI, Virgin Atlantic and Delta Airlines make their transfers in Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta respectively. Depending on the airline, the total flight to Salt Lake City will be between 12 to 20 hours.

Skiing in Salt Lake City
Admittedly you can’t ski in Salt Lake City itself, but the scenic mountains surrounding the city allow you to enjoy an impressive seven ski resorts, all just within a 40 minute drive. The snow that falls in these mountains is said to be among the best in the world for skiing and snowboarding, so it’s no wonder Salt Lake City is such a popular winter sports destination.
Whether you’re here visiting in the summer or the winter you can visit the Rice Eccles Stadium where the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were held.
Temple Square
Not only is Temple Square the most visited attraction in Salt Lake City, it’s also the most popular attraction in the state of Utah. Salt Lake City was established by the Mormons (aka the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) in 1847 and the city has been home to the church’s headquarters ever since. On Temple Square is the Mormon Temple which is beautiful both inside and out, though if you are not a practicing Mormon you cannot go inside the temple.
The two visitor centres give you a chance to find out more about the temple though, and the religion as a whole, while the Church History Museum goes into more detail.

And if Temple Square has whet your appetite you can learn yet more about the Mormons at the ‘This is The Place Heritage Park’. This heritage park shows you what life would have been like for the first pioneers to arrive here in the 19th century.
More Recreation in Salt Lake City
Those mountains surrounding Salt Lake City offer many opportunities for recreation, plus there are a number of parks and more inside the city too. The Bonneville Shore Line is great for hikers and cyclists as the nature trail runs for 90 miles in total and takes you through the foothills of the Wasatch Front. Salt Lake City also has parks and gardens including the largest, Liberty Park, plus there’s family fun at the Hogle Zoo.
When Should You Visit Salt Lake City?
If you’re coming to Salt Lake City for sightseeing then you should plan on coming in the summer when temperatures are hot. It’s an average high of 33C in July, the warmest month, but spring and autumn can have nice weather and pleasant temperatures too. To enjoy the great winter sports obviously plan your trip to Salt Lake City over the winter months, when temperatures are low and snowfall is high!
