Places in Vermont
The largest city in the US state of Vermont is Burlington and it’s situated o the shores of Lake Champlain in the north east of this New England state. Though credited as being the largest city in Vermont, Burlington is no metropolis, and actually has the title of the smallest largest city in the USA!
Flights to Burlington
Despite the name, the Burlington International Airport (airport code: BTV) doesn't directly accept any overseas air traffic, so all flights to Burlington from the UK will have to transfer once in the United States. Most flights to Burlington travel via New York City, such as with Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines, KLM and even Kuwait Airways. BMI and United flights to Burlington go through Washington instead. Once you arrive, the airport is just 3 miles (5km) outside of downtown, and there is a public bus service as well as taxis.
Burlington Tourist Attractions
The large yet small size of Burlington makes this an attractive city, which although not bursting with tourist attractions is a pleasant place to visit all the same. The lakeside setting certainly adds to the appeal, and Burlington is the largest city on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Lake Champlain
The setting for Burlington makes this a popular destination with outdoor enthusiasts as there are many activities you can enjoy on Lake Champlain itself, and along its shores. Being lakeside also means Burlington is an attractive city with the lake in the foreground, and the Adirondacks in the distance. Boating is obviously one of the top pastimes here, but if you’d rather have someone else do the hard work you can enjoy boat tours out onto the lake from Burlington harbour, or take the ferry across the lake to the town of Port Kent, which sits on the New York State side of the lake.
On the shores of Lake Champlain you can go for walks and hikes, or set out from Burlington on a bicycle and tour the purpose built cycle path that runs along the shoreline for about 8 miles.
ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center is lake focused, featuring an aquarium with over 70 species of fish and marine life, and science exhibits that educate and entertain.
Burlington City Centre
The downtown area of Burlington is worth visiting too, even though it’s not steeped in tourist attractions. Burlington downtown has some great independent shops that you don’t always find in the larger cities and then there’s Church Street Marketplace for more shopping and culture too. This part of the downtown is strictly for pedestrians, making it a relaxing place to wander around.
For a touch of history you can visit Burlington’s Ethan Allen Homestead Museum which was home to the founder of Vermont. Here you can see an 18th century homestead, just outside of Burlington.
When Should You Visit Burlington?
For the warmest weather visit Burlington in July when the average high is 27C, however, be aware that July has marginally more rainfall than any other month! In reality you should expect rainfall whatever time of year you visit Burlington, though in the winter this will usually fall as snow, and with the cold temperatures winter isn’t a good time for visiting.
