The capital of the United States was originally and officially known as the District of Columbia, but is now more commonly called Washington, DC. Because of the rules of the United States Constitution the city does not form part of any of the 50 US states; it is completely independent.

Flights to the District of Columbia

Washington DC is home to three major airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (airport code: DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (airport code: IAD) and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (airport code: BWI). Visitors can get flights from the UK to Ronald Reagan and to Baltimore-Washington Airport but these are indirect with one stop through airlines such as US Airways and Delta Air Lines. Most commonly the Washington Dulles International Airport is used as the gateway for flights to Washington DC and direct flights to here from the UK are offered by United Airlines, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and BMI.

Washington DC Tourist Attractions

Along with the White House, Washington DC is best known for its many iconic monuments, most of which are situated within an area called The Mall. This is where many tourists spend the majority of their time, and certainly if you’re visiting only for a limited time you will want to concentrate your efforts here. However there is more to Washington DC than just The Mall!

The National Mall

Often known more simply as just The Mall, this area of Washington DC is packed with things to see. Stretching for 2 miles this is an avenue of green space and monuments which runs from just south of the White House, east to west from the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. The area is actually one of the US’s National Parks.

The Washington Monument stands at 550 feet high and is the tallest obelisk and tallest stone structure in the world. From the observation deck you get great views up and down The Mall and on a clear day far reaching views to as far as the Shenandoah Mountains. Admission is free but it’s by timed ticket which should be collected first thing in the day is possible to make sure you get entry.

After the Washington Memorial the Lincoln Memorial is the most striking. This is a huge temple-like monument that was modeled on the Greek Temple of Zeus and at the entrance sits a giant sculpture of Lincoln himself overlooking the Reflecting Pool.

The other monuments on The Mall include the DC War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Declaration of Independence Memorial.

The Smithsonian Institute

Known throughout the world, the Smithsonian Institute is highly respected and is a must see for museum lovers. Not just one museum, the Smithsonian actually consists of a staggering 19 different museums, all of which are free! Many of the country’s best museums are here such as the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Natural History, and the National Museum of American History.

The White House

Of course, the White House, at the end of The Mall is also one of Washington’s top attractions, and is more officially called the US Capitol Building. Unfortunately closed to the general public you can view the US’s most important residence from beyond the fences.

When Should You Visit Washington DC?

June, July and August are quite hot and humid and hence may not be the best time for exploring outdoor areas like The Mall. Temperatures average at highs of between 29 and 31C (84 and 88F) during these months though feel hotter with the high humidity. Spring and autumn are lovely times to visit with pleasant temperatures, whilst winters are generally on the cold side.
