Nicknamed the Mountain State, West Virginia is the only state in the USA to be situated entirely within a mountain range, namely the Appalachian Mountains. This mountain setting makes West Virginia a very scenic state, plus there’s plenty of beauty in its towns and cities too.

There are more than a dozen airports in West Virginia, but most of them are for local domestic flights and general aviation. The main airport for international flights to West Virginia is the Yeager Airport (airport code: CRW) near the state capital of Charleston. There are shuttles and taxis for the 3 mile trip into Charleston but no public transit. You can get a 1-stop flight to West Virginia with Continental from the UK, travelling through Washington, or stop in New York and Washington with United Airlines.

Being situated within the Appalachians, West Virginia really is a beautiful state. Enjoying the great outdoors is a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike, and there are plenty of places that you can do this. If you’re looking for specific destinations, try the Monongahela National Forest…

Monongahela National Forest

With over 500 miles of hiking trails to explore this National Forest is perfect for outdoor lovers! Even with a couple of spare months you’d be hard pushed to fully explore this 900,000 acre forest, but if you like the outdoors there’s plenty to do here. The hiking trails are just one of the attractions; there’s also many places to camp, go fishing, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, horse riding, boating, and bird and wildlife watching. Seneca Rocks is a popular climbing destination where there are 900 feet high rock formations, or get to the highest point in West Virginia at Spruce Knob to climb the observation tower and enjoy the spectacular views.

It’s not all wilderness in this part of West Virginia though. The Monongahela National Forest also covers small communities, each with something different to offer.

Harpers Ferry

The attractive town of Harpers Ferry is said to be the most popular tourist destination in West Virginia and with its picturesque buildings and history it’s easy to see why. Harpers Ferry played an important part in the American Civil War, and today it’s within the Harpers Ferry National Historic Site. The quaint town is very pretty, plus there’s more of West Virginia’s great scenery all around it.

Charleston

From the minor towns to the largest one in West Virginia; Charleston is the largest city and also the capital of the state. There are numerous sights here including the West Virginia State Capitol Building which has the largest state capitol dome in the country. The building is part of a complex that includes other historic buildings such as the Governor’s Mansion, the Cultural Center, and Holly Grove Mansion.

Even when you’re visiting Charleston you can still enjoy West Virginia’s scenery as the Kanawha State Forest is very nearby and it features hiking trails, camping, biking and horse riding trails too.

When Should You Visit West Virginia?

For enjoying the great outdoors of West Virginia summertime is definitely best as temperatures are warm to hot, depending on the elevation. Elevation does change quite considerably in West Virginia, being in the mountains, and this will also affect the winter temperatures.
