Places in Wisconsin
As the largest city in the US state of Wisconsin, Milwaukee has a good range of tourist attractions. Though it’s been more of an industrial city in the past, Milwaukee is now growing in popularity as more cultural and entertainment options are added.
Flights to Milwaukee
The main airport for the state is just outside of Milwaukee, the General Mitchell International Airport (airport code: MKE). Various bus routes can get you from town to the airport, and there is a train station as well. Coming from London, all flights to Milwaukee have just one connection. You'll stop in Denver if you book with either United Airlines or Continental Airlines. A flight to Milwaukee with BMI goes through Chicago, while Air Canada makes its stop in Toronto.
Milwaukee Tourist Attractions
Milwaukee was once a major manufacturing city and was famous for its breweries. Both of these industries are quite as major as they once were, but rather than pull down all the old factories and warehouses, many have been converted into luxury apartments and entertainment complexes so as to attract both locals and tourists back in the centre of Milwaukee. Today, Milwaukee offers plenty of culture and is a vibrant city with lots to see and do.
Milwaukee Riverwalk
One of those new attractions to Milwaukee is the Riverwalk. Rather than block off access to the Milwaukee River, the city has opened up access to it by building the Riverwalk, making this a lovely place to come for a walk and enjoy a drink in one of the cafés or brewpubs. There are attractions along the Riverwalk too, including a famous statue of Fonzie, art displays, a park and more.
Pier Wisconsin
Along similar lines is Pier Wisconsin, though this makes use of the city’s location on Lake Michigan. There are several attractions here too, but the main one is Discovery World which is a science and technology museum with a focus on the Great Lakes. The museum includes full size replicas of boats and schooners.
Historic Third Ward
Now known as the ‘Historic’ Third Ward this was once the warehouse district for Milwaukee, but is now a popular artsy district. You’ll find new funky apartments and homes alongside businesses, a theatre, specialty shops, and restaurants, making this particularly popular with the young and trendy.
St Josaphat Basilica
In contrast to the historic warehouse district is some of the architecture built by and for the Polish immigrants. St Josaphat Basilica is a major landmark for the city and it’s situated in the Lincoln Village neighbourhood, which was home to many Polish immigrants in the early 20th century. The cathedral was built in 1901 and it’s one of the finest examples of its kind in North America. It has one of the largest copper domes in the world.
Other Landmarks in Milwaukee
Another well known landmark is the Milwaukee Art Museum. Not only is this a very good art museum, but the architecture is a work of art itself with its ‘wings’ that open and close four times a day! Also in Milwaukee is The Domes – three huge glass domes that contain the city’s horticultural gardens.
When Should You Visit Milwaukee?
Summers are usually very nice in Milwaukee as the average high temperature is in the high 20’s C and it’s quite sunny. The weather can be changeable at any time of year due to the Great Lakes, and this is particularly true in the winter when storms come off the lakes and dump a load of snow on the city! It’s cold and windy at this time of year too.
