Places in Wyoming
Located in the far south east of the state of Wyoming is the city of Cheyenne. Cheyenne is both the capital and the largest city in Wyoming, and it was named after the Native Americans who lived here before the city was established.
Flights to Cheyenne
The city is served by the Cheyenne Regional Airport (airport code: CYS), offering mainly domestic flights to Cheyenne. When coming from the UK, you'll have to transfer at least once elsewhere in the USA before arriving in Cheyenne. United Airlines and Continental Airlines both have flights to Cheyenne that travel through New York City and Denver. Virgin Atlantic goes the same way. You can stop in Boston and Denver if you catch a flight to Cheyenne with British Airways.
Cheyenne Tourist Attractions
Cheyenne is a lovely city which, although the largest in the state, is actually quite small with a population of around 60,000 people. The city was founded in 1867 and today there are still numerous historical buildings from that founding period. In fact there are around 50 buildings listed on the National Register of Historical Places, making Cheyenne a great place to visit if you enjoy history and its architecture.
Wyoming State Capitol
One of those listed places is the Wyoming State Capitol. It was built between 1886 and 1890 and is a very grand building of the Pseudo-Corinthian style. Inside there are beautiful panelled walls and cherry woods, and the central dome is covered with 24 carat gold leaf. From inside you can see the dome and the stained glass that came from England. Tours are available of the State Capitol or you can wander inside and look at some parts of the building yourself, during business hours.
Historical Governor’s Mansion
Another listed building, and popular tourist attraction in Cheyenne, is the Historical Governor’s Mansion. Formerly the home of the Governor of Wyoming, this 1905 built house has been restored and is open to the public. It’s very interesting to tour the home today as rooms are set up to show period furnishings and decorations from three periods in the past – 1905, 1937 and 1960.
Wyoming State Museum
Cheyenne has several museums that are dedicated to the history of Wyoming and the ‘West’ region of the United States. The Wyoming State Museum exhibits the history of the state going right back to prehistoric times as there are dinosaur bones and fossils to see. Much later on in the history of Wyoming are accounts of settlers coming here as well as displays of local wildlife.
The other museum in Cheyenne dedicated to history is the Nelson Museum of the West, which takes a more specific look at Native American art, cowboy memorabilia, and military artefacts.
Cheyenne Botanic Gardens
For a change of scenery visit the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens in the city. It covers 9 acres of land and includes three heated greenhouses where a large selection of plants grow, including vegetables. There’s an attractive koi pond with a waterfall too. Associated with the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens is the High Plains Arboretum which is situated at an elevation of 1900 metres and is 5 miles from Cheyenne.
When Should You Visit Cheyenne?
Cheyenne has an arid climate to rainfall isn’t usually a problem for tourists. During the summer it’s fairly hot here, peaking with an average high of around 28C in July. Spring and autumn are short months but with slightly cooler temperatures this is a good time to visit. Winters are fairly long in Cheyenne and it does get cool, though average highs remain above freezing.
