Flights to American Samoa
American Samoa
American Samoa is an ‘unincorporated’ United States territory situated in the South Pacific Ocean about half way between Hawaii and New Zealand, and around 62 miles (100 km) east of Samoa. American Samoa consists of one large island and several smaller ones
There is one international airport among the islands of American Samoa, Tafuna International Airport (airport code: PPG). Flights to American Samoa from the UK are indirect and will require three connections. Your journey to American Samoa will involve at least two different airlines which include Hawaiian Airlines, US Airways, Continental Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Qantas Airways, British Airways, and American Airlines. The first two connecting flights will vary according to the airlines while the third or last connection to American Samoa will be via Honolulu, Hawaii with Hawaiian Airlines.
The Tourist Attractions of American Samoa
American Samoa is fairly typical of many tourist destinations in the South Pacific – beautiful yet rugged coastlines with volcanoes rising upwards from them; stunning beaches and appealing blue seas. All these features make American Samoa an attractive holiday destination, though the difficulty in getting here from the UK has hindered its popularity with the British. You can look at this one of two ways: either you forget about American Samoa because getting here is too much hassle! Or, you make the effort to come here because you’ll find it’s far quieter than some other popular South Pacific islands!
Pago Pago
Pago Pago is the capital of American Samoa though is by no means a large city! Visitors arriving on flights from the UK will land approximately 16 miles (25km) from the ‘town’ and many of the hotels in the area offer some kind of airport pick up if you’ve already arranged your accommodation in advance. Even if you haven’t made arrangements the hotels would be more than happy to collect you with the promise of you staying a night or two!
The main features of Pago Pago are the harbour and the mountains surrounding it, making this an attractive place to spend some time. A popular pastime is to climb to the summit of Mount Alava for wonderful views. This area is part of the National Park of American Samoa which spans across the main island which Pago Pago is on (called Tatuila) as well as parts of two other islands, Ofu and Ta’u.
As well as hiking up the mountains and in the rainforests, American Samoa National Park is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling along the coral reefs
Ofu-Olosega
Ofu and Olosega are volcanic islands connected by a narrow strait. The island is best known for its stunning beaches and sharp, steep peaks which are garnished with lush green forests. These are said to be among the most spectacular beaches in the South Pacific.
When Should You Visit American Samoa?
American Samoa experiences a hot and humid climate with rain possible at any time of the year. The highest rainfall occurs during its summer season though, between October and May, whilst the winter, June to September is a little cooler and dryer and hence less humid too. Between December and March American Samoa is at high risk of being hit by typhoons.
