Flights to Pago Pago
American Samoa
Pago Pago is the capital of American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the South Pacific Ocean and is about half way between New Zealand and Hawaii.
Flights to Pago Pago from the UK are available only with indirect routes and the journey will be long-winded requiring three connections with at least two different airlines. The international airport, called Tafuna International Airport (airport code: PPG) is located approximately 16 miles from Pago Pago, and the area can be easily reached by taxi from the airport.
Flights to Pago Pago can be made through airlines such as US Airways, Continental Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Qantas Airways, and American Airlines. The first two connections will vary depending on which airline you choose your flight with, however, your third or last connecting flight will be via Honolulu, Hawaii with Hawaiian Airlines.
Because Pago Pago is not the most accessible place in the world this may have the benefit of this being a quieter destination than some other South Pacific islands, giving visitors a slightly more authentic experience.
The Tourist Attractions of Pago Pago
First a lesson in pronunciation as Pago Pago is not spoken the way it reads! The actual pronunciation is Pongo Pongo!!
Pago Pago is very unlike most other capitals in the world. Pago Pago, strictly speaking is actually just a village, but the harbour is also referred to as Pago Pago. This has resulted in the whole area, including surrounding villages, being called Pago Pago, so when you look at accommodation options, check exactly where it is you will be staying as it may not be quite what you thought! Having said that, this is not a huge city and each one of the villages in this region will be much the same as the next one!
If you’re considering coming to Pago Pago for a holiday you’ll be wandering what there is to see and do here, and the answer is ‘not much’! Pago Pago is principally a destination for enjoying the weather and the scenery. The harbour, for example, is surrounded by beautiful mountains with lush green forests adorning them. Climbing to the peaks is a popular pastime as the views from above are even more spectacular than from below, giving you views out across the island and into the ocean.
The view from Mount Alava is said to be one of the best, and hiking in this area will also take you into a section of the American Samoa National Park. If you don’t fancy the hike to the top, this part of the park is also accessible by car so you can drive around some parts of it.
When Should You Visit Pago Pago?
The climate of Pago Pago is predominantly hot and humid though rainfall is possible throughout the year and the relatively high rainfall is evidenced by how green the whole of American Samoa is. Being in the Southern Hemisphere winter is from June to September and this really is probably the best time to visit. This time of year is not so humid and a little dryer and cooler. Summer, from October to May, is the rainy season, and from December to March there is the risk of typhoons.
