Rarotonga is the main island of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, and is part of the Southern Cook Islands. The Tourist Attractions of Rarotonga

The island of Rarotonga is popular both for tourists visiting the Cook Islands on cruise ships and those coming on flights.

Rarotonga International Airport acts as the main flight gateway to the whole of the Cook Islands. The airport is only small, but benefited from having a large chunk of money spent on it in 2003 which redeveloped the terminal to improve comfort for travellers.

Rarotonga has a good many hotels, motels and resorts to choose from and is primarily a destination for tourists looking for a beach holiday with lovely sandy beaches and great weather. The fact that English (along with Cook Islands Maori) is the official language makes it all the more attractive to British holidaymakers.

In addition to enjoying the beaches for general relaxation and swimming, the waters around Rarotonga are also great for diving and snorkelling as the island is surrounded by a lagoon then a reef, making this great for underwater exploration. The best area for this is in the south east, around Muri, but in the north the reef stretches all the way to shore making swimming and water sports dangerous.

Rarotonga has beautiful inland scenery as well. The island is dominated by a volcano, and the peak called Te Manga is the highest peak on the island. Hiking inland is very popular and there is in fact a cross-island hike which visitors who want to be a little more active to attempt. Places to see include Wigmore Falls and a flat top mountain.

In the south east land has been designated as the Takitumu Conservation Area in an attempt to protect some of the local species of both birds and plants. Particularly important is the protection of the endangered Rarotonga Flycatcher.

Avarua is the largest city and is the capital of the Cook Islands. There are restaurants and shops here which specialise in the sale of black pearls. The open air market on a Saturday is particularly recommended if looking for interesting gifts or for fruits and other fresh foods.

When Should You Visit Rarotonga?

The climate of Rarotonga is tropical and so there’s not much variation in the temperature experienced across the year. Of benefit to visitors who don’t like their weather too hot is the fact that Rarotonga is tempered by trade winds. Rarotonga and the rest of the Cook Islands can be subject to typhoons between November and March so is not suitable for visiting at this time.
