The Tourist Attractions of Fiji
Fiji is a tropical island getaway which most tourists will visit primarily for a relaxing holiday where they can enjoy the beautiful beaches, and gorgeous blue waters. Despite common perceptions, Fiji is not as highly developed as some other popular tropical destinations. This fact will appeal to some tourists, but may put others off if looking for busy and bustling places with loads of nightlife. For those who want to enjoy a more peaceful location, Fiji is a perfect choice.
Many of the smaller islands of Fiji are not well developed in terms of tourism; this means you may only find backpacker type accommodation, which has fairly basic facilities. Tourists who prefer to enjoy Fiji for what it is rather than living in relative luxury, should actually find that these more basic hotels are a great choice for getting closer to a real Fijian experience!
The Yasawa Islands is a good example of the more basic end of accommodation in Fiji. This is a group of islands at the north western end of the chain. There are twelve major islands here, and about 30 resorts between them. Facilities vary from resort to resort – some may just provide a bed and nothing else, whilst others may have en-suite facilities. Despite the development, these islands remain quite unspoilt and the main attractions are nature based – hiking, scuba diving, snorkelling, and cave exploration.
However, if you are wanting a more luxurious holiday, the larger islands have been more developed and you’ll find a number of high class resorts and hotels to choose from.
The largest island in Fiji is Viti Levu. The capital city, Suva, is located here, as are the other cities of Lautoka and Nadi. Nadi is the home of Fiji’s international airport. Apart from the beaches, the main attraction on Viti Levu is the Koroyanitu National Park where visitors can see semi rainforest as well as small traditional villages and waterfalls.
When Should You Visit Fiji?
Fiji is a good destination to visit most of the year because its tropical marine climate means that the temperatures stay fairly constant. Moderated by trade winds, Fiji never gets unbearably hot, peaking at around 35C usually.
The only time you should avoid visiting Fiji is between December and February. This is the rainy season when chances of a tropical cyclone are at their strongest.
