Nadi (pronounced nandi) is a town in Fiji, situated on the main Fijian island of Viti Levu. It’s a major hub for tourism in Fiji though it’s usually not a tourist’s final destination, being used more as a stopping point. However if you’re coming to Nadi you’ll find there are several attractions worth considering.

Flights to Nadi

The Nadi International Airport (airport code: NAN) handles nearly all the international flight traffic to Fiji and so flights to Nadi from the UK are available with several major airlines. The airport is 5.5 miles (9km) from the city centre, and there are both taxis and public buses to help you get around. Virgin Atlantic has a one-stop flight to Nadi that transfers in Sydney, and Air New Zealand also has one transfer in Auckland (though note that these will also have a technical stop too). Another option is a flight to Nadi with British Airways that travels through Singapore and then Sydney.

Nadi Tourist Attractions

As the home of Fiji’s main international airport, the majority of visitors coming to Fiji will travel in and out of Nadi. From Nadi you can then catch a flight to other destinations, or take a ferry boat, depending on where you’re heading. Nadi has a good selection of hotels available, though usually these are used by people as a stopping off point, while waiting for a plane or a ferry. If you find yourself with time to kill in Nadi it’s worth spending some time exploring the town, rather than simply staying within the confines of a hotel. Nadi has several things to see and do, including the following:

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

This temple, built in 1986, is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s the National Temple for Fiji and was constructed because the Fijians believed a larger one was required. Although this is not a historical attraction, as many temples are, the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is still impressive and features some beautiful ornate work above the main entrance.

Sleeping Giant Gardens

Canadian actor, Raymond Burr, is responsible for the establishment of these gardens as he wanted somewhere for his own impressive and private collection of orchids. However the gardens were developed further and have now become a popular Nadi attraction featuring many different types of plants and walking trails to enjoy.

Nadi is also home to the Waqadra Botanical Gardens.

Wailoaloa Beach

At the northern end of Nadi is Wailoaloa Beach, stretching for half a mile. If you are planning to stay in the Nadi area for your holiday then this is a good place to stay. The beach is nice and it’s fronted by many hotels, resorts and beach clubs where you can stay, and make the most of all the facilities.

When Should You Visit Nadi?

Like the rest of Fiji, Nadi has a tropical climate with warm weather all year round. Tropical weather usually means high rainfall though Nadi is however much drier than the capital of Fiji, Suva, which is situated on the opposite coast, and hence rain is not so much of a problem.
