The Nausori International Airport (airport code: SUV) is about 30 minutes drive away from the centre of Suva. Although this is the capital city, the airport only handles a few small international flights, as the airport is mainly for local air traffic. All flights to Suva from London will have 2 connections, plus sometimes an additional stop for re-fuelling, and there are a limited number of airlines offering the service. Qantas Airways and Air Pacific take a route through Los Angeles and then Nadi. Your other option for a flight to Suva travels through Sydney and Nadi, and these flights are with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
Suva Tourist Attractions
In terms of tourism in Fiji, Nadi is the main tourist destination while Suva remains a city that tourists might like to visit if you wish to see more of the Fijian culture and way of life. This isn’t to say that Suva has nothing of interest, it’s just that most tourists coming to Fiji will be visiting to enjoy the great beaches and weather. Tourists are well catered for in Suva despite this, with some well known international hotel chains on offer and an excellent variety of restaurants serving many different cuisines from European to Indian. It’s a city that is definitely worth spending a few days in, seeing some of the following sights:
Colonial Architecture in Suva
Visitors can enjoy a variety of building styles in Fiji’s capital making this an interesting city to wander around. Of the colonial buildings to look out for there is Government House, the former residence of Fiji’s colonial governors. This is now the home of the President of Fiji. Suva City Library, also known as Carnegie Library, is another, and there’s also the Government Buildings that once housed Parliament.
Thurston Gardens
One of Suva’s most popular attractions is Thurston Gardens. This is Fiji’s botanical garden and was originally called Suva Botanical Gardens but changed to the current name to honour the fifth governor of Fiji. The gardens feature an avenue of palms and numerous different plant species. There are several buildings on site including the Fiji Museum. The Museum itself is also one of Suva’s top attractions, containing an impressive archaeological collection that dates back 3,700 years. More recent artefacts include the rudder from the HMS Bounty, the ship made famous for its mutiny.
Shopping in Suva
As the capital of Fiji Suva isn’t short on shopping experiences! Visitors can enjoy the more traditional markets including Suva Municipal Market for its fruit and vegetables, and the handicrafts in the adjacent Municipal Handicraft Centre. Cumming Street has always been a popular shopping street with shops housed in colonial buildings, plus there are modern shopping malls in Suva too.
When Should You Visit Suva?
Suva has a tropical marine climate which means although the city is warm to hot, it is also quite wet. Compared to Nadi, on the west coast, Suva has considerably more rain. The tropical influence means Suva has little temperature variation across the year though, but you should avoid visiting between December and February when the chance of cyclone is at its highest.
