Situated in the Western Pacific Ocean Guam is the southernmost of the Mariana Islands and is an unincorporated territory of the USA. Visitors to Guam will find that English is one of the official languages and the US Dollar is used for currency.

Flights to Guam are served by the island’s only airport, the Won Pat Guam International Airport (airport code: GUM). From the UK, flights to Guam are indirect and will have either one or two stops and are provided by numerous major world airlines. Korean Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways and British Airways offer one stop flights to Guam from the UK via Seoul or Tokyo. Two stop flights to Guam from the UK are offered by other airlines including Qantas Airways, Lufthansa, KLM.

Guam Tourist Attractions

Being an island in the Pacific, Guam provides ample opportunity for rest and relaxation on the beach, but has several other attractions that will appeal to visitors too. As an unincorporated territory of the USA it’s easy to see the American influence here – popular US restaurants chains, shopping malls, and more.

Guam was originally a Spanish territory but was ceded to the US in 1898. The territory remained this way until the Second World War when Japan captured Guam in 1941, and it stayed under Japanese control for the next three years. This period in Guam’s history was not without its casualties and a visit to the War in the Pacific National Historical Park serves as a reminder of this. The national park includes battlefields, trenches, and buildings.

Although tourists visit the whole of Guam, the town of Tumon is one of the top spots for tourism. High class hotels and resorts can be found here such as the Hyatt Regency Hotel, and the sports mad Pacific Islands Club Hotel and Resorts Guam.

Popular with many visitors is the Shopping Bus. This form of transport stops at most hotels in Tumon and takes you to the shopping centres. Around Tumon Bay there are many places to shop. Opportunities for duty free shopping are quite abundant here with the DFS Galleria being one of the best places. Also in Tumon here are numerous designer boutique stores including big names in fashion such as Gucci, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, and more.

Hagatna

Formerly known as Agana, Guam’s capital city is now called Hagatna. Although this is the capital of Guam, Hagatna can’t really be called a city! It’s the second smallest village in Guam and has a population of only 1100 people, though it was not always like this as Hagatna was the centre of the islands population in the 18th to mid 20th century. However there are some interesting sites here that tourists may like to visit.

In downtown Hagatna is the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica. This cathedra was built on the site of Guam’s first catholic church. This cathedral is far newer having been completed in 1959. In addition to the attractive building there is a gift shop and popular café on the grounds where Caribbean food is the theme.

When Should You Visit Guam?

The tropical marine climate experienced on Guam means the island has hot and humid temperatures throughout the majority of the year with little variation in temperatures between the seasons. December through June is the best time to visit to avoid the rains. January and February are usually the coolest months though are still warm and with lower humidity this is a nice time to visit.
