Containing somewhere around 20 to 30,000 islands, the islands of the Pacific Ocean have not yet all been counted! Often known as Oceania, the Pacific Islands are usually split geographically into three groups – Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

Flights to the Pacific Islands

There was a time not long ago when travel to the Pacific Islands would have been achieved by boat alone. Now though, many of the larger islands have developed airports and have runways large enough to handle the larger international flights, opening up the Pacific Islands to the masses. But, these airports are only located on a very small percentage of islands, so getting to some of the smaller ones is still only possible by water.

Melanesia

Meaning Black Islands, Melanesia contains some of the most popular destinations in the Pacific Islands. Places like Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Soloman Islands. Being located closer to Australia and Indonesia these are some of the more accessible Pacific Islands.

Papua New Guinea for example can be reached via indirect flights from the UK. Two connections are required and flights are available with British Airways, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, and Malaysia Airlines, then Air Niugini.

New Caledonia can be reached via one stop flights with British Airways, Japan Airlines, Air France, and All Nippon Airways, and Fiji also can be reached via one or two stop flights from the UK. Airlines offering flights to these Pacific Islands include Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air New Zealand, and Korean Airlines.

Micronesia

The Pacific Islands of Micronesia lie slightly further to the north and east of Melanesia, and are mostly situated north of the equator. Meaning, ‘small islands’ Micronesia is certainly full of some of the smaller islands of the Pacific including the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Wake Islands, Palau, and Kiribati.

When looking for flights to these Pacific Islands you’ll find that some are better linked to the outside world than others, Guam for example is surprisingly well linked with one or two stop flights from the UK. One stop flights are with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Korean Airlines flying via Seoul or Tokyo. In contrast getting to Kiribati is a long and drawn our process requiring numerous flight changes!

Polynesia

Meaning ‘many islands’, the Polynesian Pacific Islands cover the largest area of the three groups, spreading from Hawaii in the north down to New Zealand in the south. This region also includes islands such as French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa and American Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

The ease at which you can get flights to these destinations varies. From the UK, flights to American Samoa for example would require three connections and a journey with at least two airlines including US Airways, Continental, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, Hawaiian Airways, American Airlines, and British Airways.

Flights to the Pacific Islands of French Polynesia are a little easier with one or two stop flights from the UK available with airlines that include BMI, British Airways, Air New Zealand, Air Tahiti Nui, Virgin Atlantic, and Continental.
