The Tourist Attractions of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is an interesting and diverse country, one of the most diverse in the world with over 850 indigenous languages and hundreds of traditional cultures and societies. It is also one of the most rural countries in the world and one of the least explored. This means visitors will get to see a very unique country and experience life rarely seen in the majority of the world today.

Being under-developed though also means there is little to no tourism infrastructure in Papua New Guinea. There are several hotels in the capital city, Port Moresby, but these are expensive and may not appeal to the type of traveller who Papua New Guinea appeals to – i.e. an adventure tourist who does not mind roughing it!

With the limited infrastructure and so many rural areas, getting around Papua New Guinea can be problematic too. The country has quite a high crime rate because there is not much of a police force to speak of here and western tourists may be targeted. In contrast though, many visitors find a very warm welcome in Papua New Guinea and people that are happy to go out of their way to help you.

Port Moresby

The capital, and only real city to speak of, is Port Moresby, located on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. With the international airport here this is the main entry point for visitors to the country though there is not a great deal to attract you to stay more than a night or two before moving on. The Botanical Gardens are the main attraction, featuring not only plants but wildlife and birds too. If you’re in the city during the craft market (which is held once a month) this is a good place to visit for some beautiful local crafts.

Madang

On the northern coast the town of Madang is best know for its great scuba diving and is a better and safer alternative to Port Moresby if you want to experience the slightly more urban side to Papua New Guinea. You can enjoy swimming, diving, shopping, and dining here, and there are several good hotels and lodges to choose from.

The Kokoda Track

Though not nearly as isolated as most parts of Papua New Guinea, the Kokoda Track is the ideal track for trekking on, covering the distance between the north and the south of Papua New Guinea and is particularly popular with Australian visitors.

When Should You Visit Papua New Guinea?

Papua New Guinea has a tropical climate and experiences high temperatures that don’t vary much throughout the year. The country is affected by two monsoons – the northwest monsoon from December to March, and the southeast monsoon from May to October. Visiting in the months in between the monsoons is probably best recommended.
