Flights to Port Moresby
Papua New Guinea
The capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea is Port Moresby. Situated on the south-eastern coast of this Pacific island country, Port Moresby is on the edge of the Gulf of Papua. Although it is the capital, the city does not have a great deal to offer the tourist and many visitors may prefer to avoid Port Moresby altogether.
Flights to Port Moresby
Port Moresby is the location for Papua New Guinea’s only international airport. Jacksons International Airport, more simply known as Port Moresby Airport (airport code: POM) is just 5 miles (8km) outside of the city centre. Flights to Port Moresby from the UK are long and require two connections, and flights with at least two different airlines. From the UK flights to Port Moresby can be taken with airlines including Qantas Airways, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Malaysia Airlines. The final leg of the journey will be taken with Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea.
Tourism in Port Moresby
To put it bluntly, Port Moresby is not really a tourist destination. There are only a limited number of ‘attractions’ here, and a certain amount of lawlessness. As with the whole of Papua New Guinea infrastructure in Port Moresby is limited, though this is of course the most developed part of the whole country.
The general lack of infrastructure includes a lack of police and law, and this in turn has lead to Port Moresby being quite a dangerous city for tourists. Walking about the city at night is something you should not do, and even during the day it is not advised. Taking a taxi to where you want to go is a far better idea.
Tourists will find that Port Moresby does have several hotels that are of a good standard, however this good standard comes at a price. You can stay at the likes of Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza. The restaurants in the hotels are usually a good place to eat but there is an assortment of other restaurants in the city that are good too.
Port Moresby Tourist Attractions
The main tourist attraction in Port Moresby is the Botanical Gardens. These beautiful gardens feature birds as well, such as birds of paradise, which you may see perched in the trees. This is a popular venue for local weddings so if you’re lucky enough to visit on a wedding ceremony day spend some time enjoying the celebration!
Once a month Port Moresby plays host to a large craft market. Again if you’re lucky enough to be in town when this is being held you should try to get along as this is an excellent place to see and buy local and national handmade arts and crafts.
For something totally different try a round of golf at the Port Moresby Golf Club which welcomes visitors with reasonable prices. You should seriously be aware that there may be crocodiles in the water courses here, so watch where your ball lands! The restaurant here is said to be very good for lunch.
Although the town of Madang is best known for diving on Papua New Guinea, scuba divers may also like to try the diving off of Port Moresby where there are both reefs and wrecks to dive on.
When Should You Visit Port Moresby?
Port Moresby has a tropical climate giving visitors warm to hot temperatures throughout the year, however the city is affected by two seasonal monsoons, from December to March, and May to October so may be best avoided at these times.
