Solomon Islands Tourist Attractions

Despite the seemingly popular location of the Solomon Islands and the vast number of islands that are situated here this is not actually a major tourist destination, especially not for those visitors who are seeking a luxurious South Pacific holiday!

The Solomon Islands was originally a British protectorate but established self governance in 1976 and full independence in 1978. It’s now a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state and a parliament running the country. Unfortunately since this change the country has not been run as effectively as it perhaps should have been and things like infrastructure development has been neglected. The Solomon Islands in reality is a very nice place to visit however there just isn’t much of a tourist infrastructure here. For this reason, the Solomon Islands is more likely to appeal to backpackers and to divers who are coming here to use the islands as base for great diving.

The Solomon Islands is particularly well known for its diving and although there’s ample opportunity for this across the expanse of the islands the three top spots for scuba diving are the islands of Uepi, Munda and Gizo. Another leisure activity that’s popular is hiking. With so much space left undeveloped the interiors of the islands are pristine and beautiful, making this an excellent place for exploring.

During the Second World War the Solomon Islands was the location for many major battles. Visitors interested in this period in history will find numerous remnants from this time around the Solomon Islands. At the capital city, Honiara, there are several battle sites up in the hills.

To experience today’s culture the Central Market in Honiara is a great place to mingle and is at its best usually on a Saturday morning. The market is used by locals but it’s also a great place to buy some local handicrafts as souvenirs or presents.

To see more of the Solomon Islands it would be best to use the services of Solomon Airlines. This airline has flights across the Solomon Islands to 31 different airstrips and is a fast and convenient way of getting around.

When Should You Visit the Solomon Islands?

The Solomon Islands has very little variation in temperature across the year due to its near equatorial location, but this doesn’t mean you should visit here throughout the year! Being in a tropical monsoon climate means that the wet season is usually very wet – the wettest times being between November and April. On average the temperature across the year is a pleasant 27C though between June and August it is slightly cooler.
