Flights to Apia
Western Samoa
Apia is the capital city of Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa to distinguish it from American Samoa. This small city is located on the northern coast of Samoa’s second largest island, Upolu.
Flights to Apia
Apia is home to the only international airport in Western Samoa, the Faleolo Airport (airport code: APW). It's nearly an hour away by car, and access to the city is provided by hotel shuttles and taxi cabs. The airport is small and does not handle very many international flights, so airline choice will be limited for flights to Apia. British Airways, Qantas Airways and Virgin Atlantic all take the same route, having connecting stops in Sydney and Auckland. Your only other choice for a flight to Apia from London is with United Airlines, with transfers in Los Angeles and Auckland.
Apia Tourist Attractions
While most tourists will come to Samoa to enjoy the fabulous beaches and spectacular scenery Apia makes a good stopping off point before or after your holiday, or a nice place to visit for a day trip or two. Being only a small city it’s not full of tourist attractions and doesn’t pretend to be, but there are several sights to see and markets to visit.
Robert Louis Stevenson Museum
The famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson, spent the last four years of his life here in Apia, setting up home in the village of Vailima, a few miles outside the city. His former home is now a museum and one of Apia’s top attractions, featuring items from the author’s life.
Robert Louis Stevenson is buried on one of the peaks of Mount Vaea and you can visit his grave from which you’re awarded with some wonderful views of the island and out as far as the eye can see into the Pacific Ocean.
Apia Museum
Apia Courthouse is an attractive colonial style building that’s home to the Apia Museum, on its first floor. Apia Museum is only small so won’t take up too much of your time, but if you want to escape the heat and enter an air conditioned building while finding out more about the city, this is the place to do it!
Apia’s Markets
Markets are a way of life on Polynesian islands like Apia, so these present a great opportunity to experience the culture of this city. There are three markets for you to try – the flea market, the new market, and the fish market. The flea market is great for picking up some local handicrafts, while the new market is mainly set aside for local produce and a few handicrafts. The fish market doesn’t need describing, but if you’re up at 6am on a Sunday morning it’s worth the visit!
Mulinu’u Peninsula
At the western end of Apia is the Mulinu’u Peninsula and a small village of the same name. This small village was the old ceremonial capital and is home to the Parliament House, the Lands and Title Court, and the meteorology office that’s housed within a historic observatory. There are also numerous old tombs on the peninsula.
When Should You Visit Apia?
Apia has a tropical climate so it remains a warm city all year round. The best times to visit are during the dry season which lasts from May to September. The rainy season, from October to March, is not only wet but threatened by tropical cyclones, so is best avoided.
