Formerly known as Western Samoa, the Independent State of Samoa is still referred to as Western Samoa by some in order to distinguish this country from American Samoa. Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, Western Samoa has two large islands and eight small islets, located roughly half way between Hawaii and New Zealand.

Flights to Western Samoa

Western Samoa has only one international airport, about an hour drive away from the capital city of Apia. Hotel shuttle buses and taxis are the best way to travel from the airport into Apia. The Faleolo Airport (airport code: APW) is not very large, and only a few international airlines service the area. All flights to Western Samoa from the UK require 2 connections. Virgin Atlantic, Qantas Airways and British Airways all follow the same route with a flight to Western Samoa that transfers in Sydney and then Auckland. A fourth option is United Airlines that flies through Los Angeles and then Auckland.

Western Samoa Tourist Attractions

Samoa is a stunningly beautiful country that is visited most for its scenery and opportunities for relaxing beach holidays. There are numerous top class resorts here, sitting on wonderful white sandy beaches that are lined with palm trees. The crystal clear lagoons are so inviting that you could be mistaken for thinking you’d found paradise itself! This is a great place to come for a relaxing holiday, but be sure to spend some time exploring the islands as there’s plenty to see in Samoa.

The two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, are both full of lush vegetation giving them a really tropical and undeveloped feel that’s part of their appeal. In actual fact much of this vegetation is semi-cultivated forests and plantations that are an excellent contrast against the barren lava fields that are also found here.

The Saleaula Lavafields on Savai’i are very accessible if you’d like to see them up close. The island’s only paved road goes right across the lavafield. Travelling from these barren lavafields the waterfalls of this Samoan island seem even more full of life – the Afu Aua Falls are amongst the most spectacular, and you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the deep pool at the bottom! Nearby don’t miss the Pulemelei Pyramid, a 12 metre high pyramid that’s the largest ancient structure in Polynesia.

Western Samoa’s mot populated island is Upolu. Unsurprisingly this is more developed than Savai’i but the island still has great appeal for its scenic beauty and culture. You’ll find the capital city, Apia here, giving the chance to run shoulders with the locals at the flea market or the food market. For more culture make sure you go to a Fia Fia, an evening of traditional Western Samoan dancing and music that’s not to be missed.

Upolu also has some spectacular waterfalls, including the 100 metre high Papapapai-Tai Falls, and the smaller Sopoaga Falls, and Togitogiga Waterfalls.

When Should You Visit Western Samoa?

The weather stays warm all year round in Western Samoa, on account of the tropical climate however this doesn’t mean it’s a year-round destination. You’ll want to avoid the rainy season as there’s also increased risk of tropical cyclones during this time, from October to March. May to September is the dry season.
