Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina and is situated in the north east of the country on the Rio de la Plata which flows out into the Atlantic Ocean. Buenos Aires, which means ‘Fair Winds’ is one of the largest cities in South America and has a great number of attractions for visitors.
Flights to Buenos Aires will land at the Ezeiza International Airport (airport code: EZE) and from the UK you can choose flights with airlines including: Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Comet, Iberia, Lufthansa, TAP Air Portugal, Air France, KLM, TAM Linhas Aereas, Air Canada, and British Airways. Flights to Buenos Aires from the UK are indirect with one connection. Routes differ according to the airlines but most fly through their home countries. The airport is about 30 to 45 minutes drive from downtown Buenos Aires, depending on traffic.
The Tourist Attractions of Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is a very vibrant and cosmopolitan city, famous for the Tango dance and with many Spanish colonial influences as Argentina was once a colony of Spain.
Microcentro
Microcentro is the downtown area of Buenos Aires where the main attraction is the Casa Rosada, meaning the Pink House, which contains the President’s offices. Casa Rosada is on a large square named Plaza de Mayo and facing the square is one of the buildings balconies. Many presidents have addressed the nation from here as well as historical figures such as Eva Peron, and later Madonna when she starred in Evita.
Also on the Plaza are several other buildings including the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Bank and the Bank Museum. Other attractions in the downtown area include the Obelisco, and the famous Florida Street.
La Boca
The La Boca neighbourhood is one of Buenos Aires’ most popular parts for tourists because it gives you a feel for the real city and how people live. The most famous element of La Boca is the colourful houses situated around the port.
Recoleta
Recoleta is best known for the Recoleta Cemetery. This is where many rich and famous Argentines have been buried, including Eva Peron. All of the tombs are above ground and feature lavishly carved stone. Nearby is the attractive church of Iglesia del Pilar and the neighbourhood’s other main attraction is the National Fine Arts Museum.
Puerto Madero
Puerto Medero contains the old docks of Buenos Aires and the area is undergoing re-development and gentrification. Entertainment, restaurants and shops are being opened all the time and this could soon become one of the city’s most popular spots.
Colonial Buildings
Buenos Aires is also famous for its old colonial buildings and there are several neighbourhoods where you can see these. San Telmo features colonial style houses and narrow cobbled streets, whilst Boedo has much history to offer in addition to Tango houses and popular cafés and restaurants.
When Should You Visit Buenos Aires?
The humid subtropical climate of Buenos Aires gives the city hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters. Summertime highs, from December to February, range from 28C (83F) to 30.4C (87F) whilst winters, June to August, range from 15C (59F) to 17C (63F). Low temperatures in the winter can go down to 7.4C (45F). Rainfall occurs year round though the highest levels are in the summer and March is the wettest month.
