The full name of the city is actually San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, but it's usually just shortened down to Catamarca though it can then be confused with the province of the same name. It's a mountain city in the northern part of Argentina that has spectacular views and many natural sights.

Adan Quiroga Archaeological Museum
Located in the city centre, the Adan Quiroga Archaeological Museum is place to learn more about the indigenous people of Argentina. There are artefacts from the pre-Columbian tribes include ceramics and even human remains. The colonial period is also represented in some exhibits. There is a small fee for entrance, and the museum is open 7 days a week.
Our Lady of the Valley Cathedral
This neo-classical cathedral in Spanish style was built between 1859 and 1875, and is dedicated to the Dark Madonna whose image has been seen in the area over the centuries. The faithful come to the church for healings and there have been other stories of miracles here as well. It's a glorious pink stoned building in the heart of Catarmarca. In Spanish, it's known as the Catedral Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Valle. The church is particularly busy on December 8 when pilgrims come to honour the Virgin.
Las Pirquitas Dam
The lake formed at the Las Pirquitos dam is a popular spot outside of Catarmarca where people come to relax and enjoy some water sports. On your way there, there are a number of old chapels along the road worth seeing too.
Mercado Artesanal Permanente y Fabrica de Alfombras
This market is an outdoor market to find hand-tied rugs, clothing, jewellery, sculptures, blankets and other traditional textiles. It's the ideal place to get some souvenirs of your trip to Catamarca, and it’s located right in the city centre.
The Great Outdoors
The scenery around Catamarca is usually the biggest attraction for many tourists, so if you are visiting you should plan some time to just go hiking or horse-back riding in the area. The mountains offer some great views, and there are a number of thermal springs near the city as well. Though you can go on your own, a guided tour group is recommended to really make the most out of this beautiful area.
When Should You Visit Catamarca?
Given its high altitude, the weather in Catamarca can change drastically without warning so you should always be prepared when packing clothing. That said, it can get quite hot in the summer times, reaching 34C (93F) on the hottest days. Winters are milder, and it will generally stay above freezing by at least a few degrees.
