Chapelco is a mountain region in south western Argentina and it’s world-renowned for the excellent skiing. But Chapelco offers more than just winter sports to tourists who want to explore a bit farther off the slopes.
This is why most people come to Chapelco, to enjoy the snow on the mountain. There are dozens of ski runs of varying difficulty, and a snowboard park as well. Ski season is from the end of June until mid-October. Aside from the slopes themselves, the resort offers fine dining and accommodations as well, or for something a little different, you can take a dog-sled tour to see the local wilderness.
San Martin de los Andes
San Martin de los Andes is the main town near Chapelco, where you find most tourists to the area come to stay. Besides just being a handy travel hub, there are a few interesting things to do within the town. The town is more than 100 years old, and looking at the architecture makes for an interesting tour. There are numerous small shops with handicrafts, and tea houses serving desserts are common through town. The Primeros Pobladores Museum is a nice spot in the centre of town to see more about the history of the city and surrounding area.
Lanin National Park
The centre-piece of the Lanin National Park is the snow-topped and extinct Lanin volcano. Lakes and streams inside the park are popular for fishing though you can also simply enjoy the park by walking the trails.
Nahuel Huapi National Park
Not far to the south of Chapelco and near the Lanin park is the Nahuel Huapi National Park, where you can hike through a number of different environments due to the elevation changes. There are mountainous regions, rainforests, steppes, lakes and many other places to see in the park. Aside from hiking, you can also go rock-climbing, kayaking or even paragliding if you want something adventurous to do. There is a fee to enter the park, and you can stay overnight if you wish to camp.
Flights to Chapelco
Flights to Chapelco arrive in the nearby town of San Martin De Los Andes, at the Aviador Carlos Campos Airport (airport code: CPC). This small airport only handles local flights to Chapelco, so when travelling from the UK you’ll need to get an indirect flight with two stops, the second of which will be in Buenos Aires. When Should You Visit Chapelco?
There are definite seasonal changes in Chapelco's weather, so planning your trip to the right part of the year will make a big difference for you. It will also depend on your intended activities in Chapelco. Needless to say, skiers won't mind the colder weather. Winters in Chapelco are between June and August when the daily temperatures are around 8C (46F). On the other hand January and February, the summer months, will reach 24C (75F).
