Corrientes Tourist Attractions
Corrientes was founded in 1588 and was originally named Saint John of Vera of the Seven Currents, which referred to the seven peninsulas jutting into the river at this point. Because of the peninsulas, the river had to swerve around the masses, causing major currents. The name was shortened to Corrientes later, which simply means ‘currents’.
Corrientes isn’t a major tourist destination but tourists will find it an attractive city to visit with a selection of colonial architecture, and modern architecture thrown in together.
General Belgrano Bridge
One of the modern pieces of architecture, and a major landmark of Corrientes, is the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge. The bridge, which is of a cable-stayed design, was opened in 1973 and links Corrientes with the city of Resistencia, on the other side of the Parana River. You can drive across the bridge, or walk the distance, as there are pedestrian lanes going across.
You can enjoy good views of General Belgrano Bridge from the Corrientes waterfront, as well as spending time on the sandy riverside beaches that line the city.
Corrientes Carnival
In some parts of Argentina the carnival parade is performed by dancing groups who dance and sometimes sing a musical play. In Corrientes though, spectators are treated to the better known form of carnival, similar to what you would experience in Rio. The Corrientes Carnival has therefore become one of the most popular carnivals in Argentina, and includes colourful costumes, music and more.
Corrientes Historical Museum
Around Corrientes you’ll find a selection of historical and colonial architecture, reflecting the city’s past. You can explore and find out more about that past at the Corrientes Historical Museum where there is a large selection of objects and artefacts relating to Corrientes’ history.
