The town of Esquel is in southern Argentina, not far from the border with Chile. It's a fairly small place but there are many places around town to visit where you can see the beauty of the Patagonian region.
The train is known locally as La Trochita but the English name is the Old Patagonian Express. It's a train tour along part of the old narrow gauge rail line on a steam-driven train. The total rail line is more than 250 miles long through the Andes, but the tour trips only go from Esquel to either Nahuel Pan or El Maiten. It's basically an hour-long trip, and a good way to see the countryside comfortably as well as get a taste for history.
Los Alerces National Park
The Los Alerces National Park is just a short drive from Esquel and it is the main attraction in the area. Parts of the park (mostly to the west) have a rain-forest landscape whereas other areas are more typical of the Patagonian forest of the region. There are a number of lakes and rivers through the park, as well as the Torrecillas Glacier. To explore the park, you can either arrange for boat tours or stick to the land by hiking the many marked trails. Fishing is allowed in the lakes as well.
Trevelin
There is a small village called Trevelin, not far from Esquel that has a lot of history, particularly reflecting its Welsh heritage. There is an old mill, several lovely churches and a historical museum there, as well as a few tea houses that offer traditional Welsh dishes. It's a nice place for a walk, and the Futaleufu Dam isn't far for some additional sights to see. There is a nature walk from Trevelin that will take you through the woods and along the Nant and Falls waterfall.
La Hoya Ski Resort
In the mountains near Esquel is the La Hoya Ski Resort, where you will find good snow conditions from June until well into October. They have artificial snow making facilities to make sure their 24 ski runs are well-groomed throughout the season.
Flights to Esquel
Most flights to Esquel Airport (airport code: EQS) are domestic, but there is limited service for international air traffic when coming from the UK. A flight to Esquel with TAM Linhas Aereas makes two connections, first in Sao Paulo and then in Buenos Aires. Your other option is to fly with Continental Airlines, and they have transfers in Los Angeles and Buenos Aires. Flights to Esquel will take between 44 and 50 hours in total.Esquel Tourist Attractions

When Should You Visit Esquel?
The weather in Esquel is generally cool all year-long so you won't have to worry about excessive heat in the summers. The warmest months in Esquel are only around 20C (68F), and that is from December until early March. The temperature will drop to just under 7C (44F) in the daytime during June and July. Depending on what your planned activities are when in Esquel (hiking or skiing), you will be able to plan your trip nearly any time of the year and be comfortable.
