Formosa Tourist Attractions
Formosa has been a more popular domestic tourism destination than one that’s popular with international tourists, though this is changing. The city isn’t brimming with attractions, but there are things to see and do, and development is also taking place to further attract visitors from abroad.
Formosa Cathedral
Officially named the Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmen, Formosa Cathedral is one of the city’s main landmarks. It’s a beautiful building that is far less ostentatious than many cathedrals around the world, and has a very Spanish missionary style to the architecture. In the square to the front of the cathedral is a cenotaph.
Formosa Riverwalk
Known locally as the Costanera, Formosa’s newly restored river walk pathway is a popular spot for both locals and visitors to the city. Formosa is situated on the banks of the River Paraguay, which divides this part of Argentina from the neighbouring country of Paraguay. The river walk is a lovely place to simply enjoy a stroll and there are places to sit in the shade of palm trees while relaxing with the river views. The river walk has also become quite a cultural centrepiece for Formosa as there are often art displays and artists displaying their works here. A few local clubs and a restaurant have also been added.
Formosa’s Museums
For more culture in Formosa there are a couple of museums to visit, the major one being the Formosa Regional History Museum. This museum is housed within one of Formosa’s historic buildings, the old Governor’s Mansion, so you get to see a historic piece of architecture as well as learn about the regional history in this attraction. Other museums include the Qomp Toba Artisanal Museum, and the Oscar Albertazzi Art Institute.
Festivals in Formosa
Across the year Formosa celebrates several festivals, so you could coincide your visit with one of these. The Fiesta de la Virgen de la Catedral is the main one that celebrates the patron saint and is held annually on July 16. There are traditional dances and events are held within Formosa’s main square, Plaza San Martin.
When Should You Visit Formosa?
Formosa is hot and humid across the year and there’s not much variation in the average high temperatures, with a range of around 10 degrees. It’s a very wet city so you’ll never avoid the rain, but if you want to come in the drier months these would be June to August (winter time). Average high temperatures are at their coolest then as well, around 21 to 24C.
