The beautiful and spectacular Iguazu Falls are situated on the border between Argentina and Brazil. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these powerful waterfalls are rated up there with Victoria Falls and Niagara Falls, and are one of Argentina’s top tourist destinations.

Flights to Iguazu Falls

The main airport for flights to Iguazu Falls on the Argentine side is the Cataratas del Iguazu International Airport (airport code: IGR). This is located by the city of Puerto Iguazu, around 10 miles from the falls. Although this is an international airport, flights are usually limited to nearby South American countries. Your best bet is to fly to Buenos Aires where you can catch daily flights to Iguazu on a local airline like Aerolineas Argentinas. The airport in Buenos Aires is the Ministro Pistarini International Airport (code: EZE) and there are 1-stop flights to here from London with British Airways, Air Canada or Continental.

Iguazu Falls Tourist Attractions

First witnessed by a European in 1551, Iguazu Falls did not begin to become a tourist destination until the 1880’s, despite their most spectacular beauty. On the Argentine side of the falls the city of Puerto Iguazu was established, acting both as a frontier city to Brazil and as a gateway to the falls, which lie only around 10 miles away from the city centre.

Iguazu Falls are often compared to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe/Zambia border as both are very large and spectacular. The Iguazu Falls contain a total of 275 falls over the course of 1.67 miles of the Iguazu River, falling various heights. The highest drop is The Devil’s Throat, as 82 metres high, by 150 metres wide, and 700 metres long.

When visiting Iguazu Falls you can make use of one of the many hotels and other accommodation services in Puerto Iguazu. The city has developed itself around tourism so there’s always plenty of options for places to stay, restaurants, shops and more, and of course many different tour companies offering trips to the falls. You may be able to get some good deals if arranged through your hotel, otherwise wait until you get the falls and you’ll find a variety of trips offered there.

Obviously Iguazu Falls themselves are the main attraction. With such great beauty it’s worth spending more time than you might otherwise, walking the trails, or perhaps enjoying a boat trip to get a closer look. On the Argentine side there are five main trails to explore, giving different views of the falls and the river. The most popular is Garganta del Diablo which is reached via a free train ride (the Rainforest Ecological Train) taking you up to a 1 kilometre (0.6 mile) long walkway. This brings you opposite the main horseshoe of falls for a great view and great noise level!

As the name suggests, the Rainforest Ecological Train is environmentally friendly so it’s the perfect choice to be used within the Iguazu National Park. As well as transporting visitors to the trail head, the train has a couple of other stops where there’s a visitor centre, places to eat etc. Funnily, this little train that transports around 900,000 visitors per year was built in Ross-on-Wye in England.

When Should You Visit Iguazu Falls?

Temperatures are warm to hot throughout the year at Iguazu Falls, and being a destination that has abundant rainfall it’s always humid here. As the falls are in the Southern Hemisphere winter is between May and September when temperatures are a little cooler – average highs ranging between 20.7C (69F) and 25.3C (78F). In the summer, average high temperatures rise to 32C (89F) in January.
