Argentina is a country in South America which is the second largest country in the continent. It borders Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The capital of Argentina is Buenos Aires which is the largest city in Argentina – its name means ‘Fair Winds’. Argentina is a country that is famous in the UK perhaps for its prolific football team, and of course Diego Maradona. As well as football, the country is famous for its dance, its architecture, its people, the food and the Andes. People often talk of corruption in Argentina but as a UK tourist, just exercise common sense when travelling leaving valuables in a safe and always cautious.

Climate

Argentina is a long country and sits under the equator so the seasons are the reverse of what we have in the UK. The summer in Buenos Aires are January and February where the weather is very hot and humid whereas winter is very wet. The average temperatures tend to be 24 degrees centigrade in the summer in Buenos Aires and 10 degrees in the winter. The further south in the country you go the colder it becomes. Remember if you are travelling during the summer holidays in the UK, August and September it may not be as hot as you expect as its not Argentina’s Summer time.

What to do

There is no escaping the stunning Andes if you are visiting Argentina. Take a day trip with a tour guide and trek the landscapes and mountains. You didn’t have to conquer the Andes but take a walk around San Marin, Sierras deCordoba, Mount Fizroy in Los Glaciares National Park and Bariloche. You can also go skiing from May to September in Las Lenas or Bariloche located on the Andes.

If visiting the capital, Buenos Aires, the take a chance to taste one of the best wines in the world – the region is known for its wines, and go shopping – the Microcentre in Avenida de Mayo has all kids of shops and markets that look elegant and refined. On the market stalls, feel free to haggle to get a fair price! Shopping is also great over at San Telmo which also has a stunning opera house called Teatro Colon.

Finally for something more beachy go to Mar de Plata which is a seaside resort where you can enjoy the usual holiday type activities and swim with seals.
