Flights to Jujuy
Places in Argentina
Jujuy province is at the very northern tip of Argentina, bordering with Chile and Bolivia. Several of the attractions in the area are either historical or natural, and there are many things to see. The region was inhabited in Pre-Columbian times and the city of Jujuy was established in 1593.
Flights to Jujuy
Though the Gobernador Horacio Guzman International Airport (airport code: JUJ) is technically an international airport, it really only handles flights to Jujuy from Buenos Aires. This means that all flights to Jujuy from London will go through Buenos Aires. Alitalia and Aerolineas Aregentinas both have the same route through Rome and Buenos Aires, and Mexicana Airlines makes connections in Mexico City and Buenos Aires. For an American transfer, fly with Delta and stop in Atlanta and Buenos Aires. Once in Buenos Aires catch a flight to Jujuy with Aerolineas Argentinas (operated by Austral Lineas Aereas), or with Andes Lineas Aereas.
Jujuy Tourist Attractions
Pucara de Tilcara
Pucara de Tilcara are pre-Incan ruins just outside the town of Tilcara in the province of Jujuy, and many buildings and walls of stone are still intact at the site. There have been artefacts found here that date back to more than 10,000 years ago and there is a good museum on the site where you can see ten rooms worth of items found through the ruins. There are mummified human remains as well as ceramics and other Indian relics. The cactus garden near the ruins is also a nice place for a walk.
Calilegua National Park
There are diverse desert and jungle landscapes to see through the Calilegua National Park, and hundreds of bird species as well as many local animals are found here. There are trails for hiking or you can just stay on the highway and take a drive through the park for a quicker tour. You can arrange for guided tours as well, and many tour companies have their own excursions through this Jujuy province park. You can go on horseback, mountain bike or just enjoy the countryside on foot.
Quebrada de Humahuaca
Quebrada de Humahuaca is a long mountain ravine that stretches for nearly 100 miles through the Jujuy province, near the small city of Humahuaca. Not only is it a beautiful natural area, the valley has been used as a human trade route for several centuries. There are caves in various locations and more than twenty known sites of prehistoric rock paintings. You can drive through the valley and stop at some ruins, impressive stone formations and some interesting small towns.
San Salvador de Jujuy
The town of San Salvador is the capital the Jujuy province and has several nice sights of its own. There is a grand cathedral in Spanish architectural style as well as an archaeological museum. San Salvador is just near the airport so there is a good chance this is where you will be arriving when you come to Jujuy anyway.
