Flights to La Rioja
Places in Argentina
The city of La Rioja was founded in 1591, and today it is the capital city of the Argentine province of the same name. La Rioja is located in a rather barren part of Argentina and that makes it a very good place to see the rugged countryside in the surrounding areas. Outdoor activities are the most popular here.
Flights to La Rioja
The airport for La Rioja is the Capitan Vicente Almandos Almonacid Airport (airport code: IRJ), located about 4 miles outside of the city. Many airlines have flights to La Rioja, all with two connections when coming from the UK, and no two flights are the same. Air France stops in Paris and Buenos Aires, and a flight to La Rioja with Aerolineas Argentinas makes its connections in Rome and also Buenos Aires. If you fly with Continental Airlines, you will go through Houston and Buenos Aires. Delta Airlines, Mexicana and Alitalia also have flights to La Rioja from the UK.
La Rioja Tourist Attractions
The City
There are many quaint and interesting sights in La Rioja itself, though none are particularly huge. If you are planning on visiting the local parks, make sure to save some time for the city as well. San Nicolas de Barros is a lovely Gothic cathedral with two tall bell spires, and the Plaza San Martin is a nice open spot in the city for a walk to see the local architecture. Take care when navigating through the centre of the city as most of the streets are designated "one way" and this can make driving complicated if you don't know your way around.
Talampaya National Park
To the south-west of La Rioja, the Talampaya National Park offers very striking landscapes filled with canyons, stone formations, rock paintings and more. It is a couple hours by car to the park from La Rioja but the area is spectacular and should not be missed. You have to arrange a guided tour in order to explore the park, either on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle.
Ischigualasto National Park
This is really just an extension of the Talampaya National Park to the south. You'll be able to see more of the impressive rocky landscape in this park including the Valley of the Moon and several tall stone spires that have been formed by wind erosion over millenniums. Some of the named ones are Aladdin’s Lamp, the Mushroom and the Parrot. Like in the Talampaya Park, you can only see the area with a guide and the tour usually takes about 4 hours to see everything.
