Bolivia is a country in South America which is bordered by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru. Peru is full of rich Latin culture and has been heavily influenced by Spain. When visiting Bolivia you will see lots of artisans at work creating buildings, paintings, ceramics, goldsmiths, silversmiths and woodcarvers. Dance and music are also important to Bolivian culture and folk tales and music is distinctive – ‘devil dances’ are popular at the annual carnival of Ouruo, which is full of colourful costumes and movement. As with many poorer south American countries you need to exercise some caution when out and about, such as not carrying valuables with you or wearing precious jewellery which may gain attention.

Always try to book in advance for the best deals when flying to Bolivia as it isn’t the most common of destinations. You can fly to Bolivia mainly from major London airports like Heathrow but you can normally get a connecting flight with your tour operator to the airport. Airlines that fly to Bolivia include AeroSur, American Airlines, Gol, Copa lights, TACA Flights, LAN Airlines, Aerocomercial Oriente Norte lights, AM Mercosur Flights, Aerolineas Argentinas Flights, Air Coment, Amazonas flights and Avianca Flights. The major locations to fly to in Bolivia include Santa Cruz, Viru Viru and La Paz. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport and remember to find out if you need any jabs beforehand.
Climate
The climate in Bolivia varies depending on where you are – on the highlands the weather can be chilly and it can go below zero degrees centigrade at night time. Snow can fall on places like Oruro and La Paz whereas other major towns like Sucre and Cochabamba tend to be moderate. The rainforest is very wet for most of the year. The warmest months are November to March.
What to do
Bolivia is a culture that is still richly rooted in musical traditions and folklore. When visiting make sure you visit some shows and see some of the dances; rural areas like Guaranis, Aymaras and Quechuas has plenty of native people showing of their culture. In La Pa, one of the major cities you can take a walk and view the incredible snow capped mountains that surround it – one of the reasons why the town is called ‘the bowl’!
Don’t forget the Andes – these mountains divide Bolivia from Peru and you can visit this natural wonder. There is also Montez le erro which has incredible sights and scenery – climb at 5pm to get to the top and see the sunset, but be warned – if you stay till late the mosquitoes are out in force.
If you love animals then take the 3 day tour to Pampa – Bolivia has a great mix of animals and here you can see birds, fishes, dolphins, monkeys, snakes, crocodiles etc. Don’t forget your mosquito spray! There are plenty out and biting in Bolivia.
If you want to relax the Salar de Chalviri which is a number of thermal springs is a great place to go and take a dip along with the other tourists – the water is naturally hot.
