Situated within the Andes Mountains in the west of Bolivia, is La Paz. Although the city of Sucre is the constitutional capital, La Paz has the title of administrative capital and is the highest capital city in the world.

International flights to La Paz are welcomed in the El Alto International Airport (airport code: LPB). Flights to La Paz from the UK are indirect with at least one connection. British Airways and American Airlines provide flights to La Paz from the UK with one stop in Sao Paulo and Miami respectively. Lufthansa, Iberia, LAN Airlines, KLM, Air Comet, Compania Boliviana de Transporte Aereo Privado Aerosur, Air Guyane, and United Airlines all provide travellers with two stop flights to La Paz from the UK.

La Paz Tourist Attractions

Just the fact that La Paz is situated so high within the Andes is attraction enough for some visitors! The city is at an official elevation of 3,660 metres (12,008 feet), though in reality this varies quite considerably, both higher and lower across the city. Of course, with such extreme elevations, there is the distinct possibility that visitors who have come from sea level will suffer from altitude sickness, and hence it is better to break your journey by staying somewhere in between until you are used to it.

La Paz has a great variety of interesting things to do and places to see. Always popular are the city’s markets, of which there are many! Some of the best include the Witches Market and the El Alto Market.

Museums in La Paz

The museums in La Paz are plentiful too. The Museum San Francisco, for example, is a restored religious complex featuring some of Bolivia’s history. There is a popular church tower here which can be climbed for views. Of interest is also the Museum of Contemporary Art, and for something a little different the Coca Museum is also quite popular, describing the history of cocaine, and supposedly has free samples!

Views Over La Paz

With its mountain location there are plenty of opportunities for great views. Visitors looking for the best views over the city and its surroundings can choose Parque Laikacota.

Buildings of Interest in La Paz

Amongst the other places of interest in La Paz are two cathedrals – the Cathedral of San Francisco where the Saint is buried, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. There is the home of Simon Bolivar, plus the Cementerio General where many of the country’s presidents are buried. Calle Jaen is a street and area which contains many colonial buildings along with more of the city’s museums, and elsewhere see the impressive Bolivian Palace of Government.

Outside La Paz

About 10 kilometres outside La Paz is the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna in Spanish). This is an interesting geological area where the mountains have been worn away because they are composed of clay here.

Visitors staying in La Paz may also like to take advantage of the day tours available to some of Bolivia’s other top tourist attractions. Tiwanaku is a Pre-Columbian site which pre-dates Macchu Picchu by thousands of years, and is just as impressive. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Titicaca is another popular trip to take from La Paz.

When Should You Visit La Paz?

With its high elevation visitors should be aware that the weather can suddenly turn in La Paz, and warm clothing is recommended at all times of year just in case.

The actual average temperatures don’t vary much over the year. Average highs vary by just a couple of degrees between 17 and 19C, whilst average lows vary between 1C in the winter (June and July), up to 6C from November to March.
