Belem Tourist Attractions
Belem is a huge city with a vast skyscraper skyline that would put any North American city to shame! In amongst these modern high-rises though there are collections of old colonial buildings too, making this an attractive city with a mixture of things to see and do. Belem does have a rich history after all, as this was the first European settlement on the Amazon and was founded in 1616.
Belem’s Landmarks
Some of those city landmarks include squares, buildings parks and museums so you should try to see Republic Square, the Theatre of Peace, Batista Campos Square and a few others. The theatre is definitely an impressive building that was built on the back of the rubber boom, and rather than just seeing this building from the outside you can actually enjoy a tour that lasts 30 minutes and are given every hour.
Of the colonial buildings many have similarities to historic architecture of Lisbon, thanks to the Portuguese influence of course. Forte do Costelo still exists today and it was one of the first structures to be built in Belem.
Parks and Gardens of Belem
To escape the city streets, Belem has several parks and gardens, and of these the Rodriguez Alves Wood Botanical Garden is probably the most impressive. This unique garden is situated right in the heart of Belem and really does provide an oasis from city life. Until you enter you can’t really appreciate the character of this place with its lakes, orchids, waterfalls, caverns and more, as well as 2,500 native species of plants and several species of small animals too.
Markets in Belem
Belem is a great city for visitors who enjoy shopping as there are several traditional markets along with all the modern shopping streets. The markets include Ver-o-Peso Market which was established in 1688. This is a huge market where all sorts of foods are sold as well as some arts and crafts, medicinal herbs and more, across about 2000 stalls, making this the biggest open market in Latin America. Nearby is the old iron market.
