Flights to Brasilia
Places in Brazil
Brasilia may not be the largest city in Brazil, but it is the capital. Many of the government buildings are located here, and many have been constructed in unique modern styles.
Flights to Brasilia
Flights to Brasilia arrive at the Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (airport code: BSB), located 7 miles from the city centre. A number of airlines offer flights to Brasilia from the UK though none are direct. TAP Air Portugal and TAM Linhas Aereas both have one stop flights to Brasilia from the UK, while Lufthansa, Iberia and Air France all have two stop routes.
Brasilia Tourist Attractions
Paranoa Lake
The large Paranoa Lake is a major landmark of Brasilia and it takes up a sizable piece of the city. Because it has many fingers and tributaries to it, a boat tour of the lake will take you to many parts of the city. The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge goes across the lake, and not only allows for a pleasant walk along the pedestrian pathway but the bridge is also quite a lovely sight itself. Many popular tourist attractions are along the shores of the lake too.
Dom Bosco Sanctuary
A modern church that is imposing and concrete on the outside, Dom Bosco Sanctuary is however filled with blue stained glass on the inside. To really appreciate the architecture, you should plan on going in during the day when the sunlight comes in. The church is on the edge of Paranoa Lake, near downtown Brasilia.
Brasilia National Park
Only 6 miles (10km) away from the centre of Brasilia, the national park is actually within the city limits. The landscape in the park is scrub and savannah grasslands for the most part, but some areas are also heavily forested. The park is quite large but only has a few marked walking trails through it. Given the populations of wolf and jaguar that do live in some parts of the reserve, it's not a good idea to go off-trail very far. You can also see the natural mineral springs, and go for a rejuvenating soak.
Along the Monumental Axis
Several of the government buildings in Brasilia are sights themselves, usually as impressive examples of modern architecture. Most of these buildings are located along the Monumental Axis, the main road that leads through the middle of downtown Brasilia. In this area you can see the Itamaraty Palace (which is actually the Ministry of Foreign Relations), the National Congress, the Planalto Palace (the Presidential Office) and the Supreme Federal Tribunal. Aside from the government areas, this is also where you will see the Cathedral of Brasilia. The ribbed circular building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the 1970s. Many of the other buildings were also designed by the same architect.
When Should You Visit Brasilia?
The weather in Brasilia is quite warm and will be roughly the same no matter when in the year you are travelling. It will be 27C (81F) nearly any month, though August, September and October will reach a degree or two higher. To avoid the heavy rains, the best time to visit would be from May until July. It can be slightly cooler during those months as well.
