Cuiaba Tourist Attractions
Church of Our Lady of Good Order
The name of this church in Portuguese is Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho, and the current structure has been in place since the early 1900s. It’s a beautiful neo-Gothic building next to the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception.
Anthropology and Natural History Museum
The local name is the Museu de Historia Natural e Antroplogia, and their displays include a number of different subjects from ancient history relics to exhibits of local modern art. Actually, there are a number of history and art museums throughout the city, so you can see plenty of Cuiaba’s culture and history if you wish while visiting.
Municipal Aquarium
The Municipal Aquarium facility is right in the heart of downtown so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Here you can see displays of many local fish and water creatures, while next door is the fish market and another fun place to visit after seeing all the live fish exhibits.
Hiking in the Pantanal
The local wildlife attraction of the Cuiaba area is the Pantanal, which is one of the largest wetlands in the world. Visiting during the rainy season is not a great idea since most of the area will be underwater, so if you want to get outdoors here, definitely plan your visit for drier months. There are several protected areas within this region and many tour companies will offer hiking or boating tours through the swamps. You can see anteaters, capybaras, deer, otters, macaws, tapirs, wolves and possibly the jaguar.
Chapada dos Guimarăes
If the wetlands are not your style, you can explore more mountainous terrain if you head to the north-east of the city to the Chapada dos Guimaraes mountain range. There are waterfalls, canyons and beautiful rock formations through the area. Like with the Pantanal, you should have no trouble finding a tour operator to help you find your way through the mountains. Depending on how far from Cuiaba you want to go, there are also many areas of Amazon rainforest near the mountains.
