Flights to Fortaleza
The airport in Fortaleza is the Pinto Martins International Airport (airport code: FOR), handling mostly flights to Fortaleza from around South America. There are some European and UK flights to Fortaleza, usually with just one connection. TAP Air Portugal has a flight to Fortaleza that will stop in Lisbon. Your other option would be a route through Sao Paulo, which is available on British Airways as well as with TAM Linhas Aereas. Transport to and from the airport is easy with many taxis and a public bus line connecting the two.
Fortaleza Tourist Attractions
Fortaleza is the kind of destination that will appeal to many different visitors, as the city doesn’t just specialise in one type of attraction. It’s a great place for tourists looking for beaches and good nightlife as it has an abundance of both, but at the same time Fortaleza will appeal to tourists who want to experience some of Brazil’s culture and history. Among the many things you can see and do in Fortaleza are the following attractions:
Landmarks and Architecture in Fortaleza
Efforts have been made over the last few years to restore some of Fortaleza’s colonial architecture as the city has plenty of it dotted around, but not one specific area where it really shines. Still, you see some lovely colonial frontages with their brightly coloured paints in some areas close to the waterfront.
Fortaleza Cathedral (officially the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Joseph) is one of the major landmarks and it features some ornate stonework on the outside and some beautiful mosaics inside, while another well known landmark is on the beach. Mucuripe Lighthouse has been a symbol for Fortaleza since it was built in 1846. It was an active lighthouse for 111 years until closing in 1957 and today it houses the Lighthouse Museum.
Cultural Attractions in Fortaleza
One of the main places to go for culture in Fortaleza is the Dragao do Mar Centre of Art and Culture which was opened in 1999. The centre is somewhat of a landmark too, with its mix of striking modern architecture, with neo-classical parts too, and it combines several attractions in one. The Contemporary Art Museum is here, as is the city’s planetarium. There’s also a library and a cinema within the centre, and the surrounding neighbourhood is popular for its nightlife.
Fortaleza’s Beaches
Fortaleza has 16 miles of urban beaches that allow tourists to enjoy the beach by day and the city lights by night! Newer resort style hotels are being built along the coastline, so you can enjoy all the modern luxuries, and the beaches themselves offer soft sand and warm waters. There are many beachside restaurants and food shacks to buy from and if you want a little extra fun in the sun, head out to the Beach Park water park on the Porto das Dunas beach. This is a whole resort complex with the highlight being the water park.
When Should You Visit Fortaleza?
There’s really no variation in the temperature of Fortaleza across the whole year, but you do need to plan your visit around the wet season. This lasts from January to July. From August to December there’s virtually no rain at all so this is a good time to visit.
