Brazil’s fourth largest city is Recife and it’s a city which is becoming more and more popular with tourists from around the world. Recife is on the eastern coast of Brazil and its name in English is ‘Reef’, named for the coral reefs that sit offshore. Recife’s beaches are beautiful, and with its many waterways and bridges it has earned the nickname the Brazilian Venice.

Flights to Recife

There is a busy and very modern airport for flights to Recife, the Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport (airport code: REC) which is around 9 miles away from the downtown core of Recife, and has taxi access to the city. A direct subway line is also under construction. Most flights to Recife from the UK have two connections, except for TAP Air Portugal that has a route that stops only once in Lisbon. Iberia will travel through Madrid and Sao Paulo, or a flight to Recife with KLM can take you via Amsterdam and Sao Paulo.

Recife Tourist Attractions

As a world-wide tourist destination Recife certainly isn’t held in as high esteem as other Brazilian cities like Sao Paolo or Rio de Janeiro, but this is changing. An increasing number of international tourists are now making their way to Recife and discovering that the fourth largest city in Brazil really does have a lot to offer. Consisting of a number of small islands and separated by many rivers, Recife is more than just a coastal city, and with over 50 bridges connecting all parts of the city it has earned the nickname the Brazilian Venice. In contrast to Venice though Recife is a huge and bustling metropolis that’s full of skyscrapers, however, it does also have an appealing historic centre and plenty of culture to offer too.

Recife Antigo

Recife Antigo, or Old Recife, is the historic heart of the city and is actually located on Recife Island. This is where the Portuguese originally settled in the 16th century and though there aren’t many remnants of the original settlement there are still numerous older buildings to be seen here. One particular landmark is Malakoff Tower, built as an observatory between 1835 and 1855. After being renovated in 1999 the tower now functions as a cultural space and still as an observatory.

As well as the older sights in Recife Antigo the area is becoming popular with tourists and locals for its nightlife as several bars and clubs have been opened here.

Recife’s Beaches

Recife is best known for its beaches and the beautiful sandy beaches, great weather and warm waters are what attract most tourists to the city. Recife’s most popular beach is Boa Viagem and its popularity is highlighted by the fact that most of Recife’s best hotels are located along this stretch of coastline. The beach itself spans a broad 5 miles and features pristine white sand. The coral reefs offshore help to keep the waters calm enough for families and it’s lovely and warm too!

If you’re staying along Praia de Boa Viagem you can also enjoy a good nightlife and do some shopping at one of South America’s largest shopping malls, Shopping Centre Recife.

When Should You Visit Recife?

The southern hemisphere location of Recife means it’s summer here while the UK is in the midst of winter, however, Recife has a tropical climate that means it’s hot here year round! You’ll want to avoid the rainy season, which peaks between April and July and if you come in the peak summer season (December to March) you can expect average highs of 31C.
